Malgobila (Year 10, 11 & 12) News

An Important Message to Year 12 Students and Parents/Guardians

If you are the Parent/Guardian of a Year 12 student, have you realised that the next school holidays will be the students’ last school holidays….EVER.

I wonder if our Year 12 students realise that they have five weeks of school left……EVER.

That equates to fifteen lessons of each subject. Yikes!

The last day of official classes for Year 12 VCE and VCAL classes will be Friday, 25th October, 2019.

All VCE School Assessed Coursework and VCAL Outcomes must be submitted by this date.

What are you, as a Parent/Guardian thinking about this?

Perhaps you deserve a VCE or VCAL certificate too. Wow, the end is nigh.

For most students, sometime before Wednesday, 20th November, 2019 will be their last VCAA exam.

For the first time in their school lives, the day after this, there is genuinely nothing to do, it’s a weird feeling.

During these holidays we urge you to encourage your child to take a big breath and dive in,

some students have revision lectures in Melbourne, and some have poly-conference revision lectures here at school. Teachers will be holding revision and exam practice days during the holidays, remind your child to keep an ear out for these opportunities.

The feeling of accomplishment walking away from that last exam or the last outcome is indescribable. Sometimes, at this time of year our students start to feel a little overwhelmed, stress and anxiety creeps in. Please contact us if you notice this. We can help manage and work with your child to try alleviate this to some extent.

Some things you could do to help your student make the most of their time include

  • Chatting about their study and revision plan
  • Ask them what they are hoping to achieve in the next hour, or two when they are off to study
  • Ask them to explain the crazy revision posters they have stuck up behind the bathroom door
  • Buy them some little cards at Kmart so they can make some prompt cards to aid revision and recall of factual information
  • Make sure they are warm and well slept, there’s plenty of time for partying after exams
  • Would your student consider cutting their work hours?
  • Let them off the dishes

I promise all of our teachers will be tossing out pearls of wisdom regarding revision in class, some will work and some will not.

I can assure you that we are working really hard here at school to get every student not only just over the line but with results they can be proud of.

We would love to hear from you if there’s something you think we can do to make the next few weeks run more smoothly.

Reflections from the Senior Hub Desk

I would like to share a story about one of many amazing Year 10 students who attend our College.

This particular student joined the Senior Hub at the beginning of the year and unlike a lot of the other students, she didn’t seem to smile much. She would come to the desk every morning asking "Where is my class? Do you have a pen I could borrow?

We became more familiar and we would chat, I would ask her why she was wearing jeans as jeans are not included in our school uniform, her response,  "This is what I wear." and off she would go.

Over the next few weeks we developed a relationship and I soon noticed that she didn’t always go to her classes. When I asked her why, she replied that she was concerned that her friends had things happening in their lives and she wanted to help them. I tried to explain and help her understand that she needed to look after herself. This is the beginning of her senior education. It was time to get serious, her future was at stake.

Term 2 came and went. She considered leaving school, perhaps attending TAFE or finding some full time employment. There was a time where I could tell she was lonely. Each day she would check in, we would chat between every session, she would always ask for a pen, or where her class was, I would ask why would she not comply in wearing uniform, her reply, "I don't have any."  I organised uniform for her and she has never been out of uniform since she received it. I noticed her attendance had improved, she was smiling and her friendship group had changed.

In Term 3, she still checks in every day and I am grateful for this. Occasionally, she borrows a pen or asks where her class is, but she’s looking out for herself now, she is also trying to make things better for others. She has become a leader. She has convinced other students to come forward and ask for help.

Today, she asked me to read a piece of work she had produced in Pastoral, about her personal journey.

My expression was tears, I am so proud of this student.  She shared her work with other staff members who have helped her along the way.

We all believe it’s never too late to strive hard for what you want.

Work hard, make the most of every opportunity and build a great future for yourself.

Congratulations young lady.
