Wellbeing Ideas

TEM Hockey club is not just about hockey.  Hockey is what we do, what we love, what brings us together; however first and foremost we are a community.  2020 is a year that is asking of all of us to show how strong our community really is.  Our community extends beyond the players to parents, sibling, grandparents, partners, children all of whom we care about.  Our sense of belonging to our club means we will strengthen this community every day by how we look after ourselves and each other.

As we all enter these unchartered waters, we will encounter a range of emotions and stresses.  Here are a few tips we have found that might be of use.  Don't be afraid to reach out to others, including your Wellbeing committee, if you feel you need help.  We are all in this together and we will all come out of it together too.

When there is uncertainty and that uncertainty is linked to health and wellbeing it can sometimes mean we have a sense of anxiety.

Here are The Australian Psychological Association Tips for Dealing with Coronavirus anxiety:

Stick with the facts

  • Its easy to be overwhelmed by the Covid19 coverage which can really add to feelings of anxiety.  Try to limit media exposure, and get information from reliable sources such as the state and federal government websites and the WHO. (World Health Organisation)

TEM tip:

  • This is very hard with social media and some news media outlets.  If you’re not sure download the government’s coronavirus app
  • When friends tell you they are feeling anxious, be open and non-judgmental; we are all trying the best we can to manage and everyone has different circumstances they are facing.  Be present and patient.

Practise self-care

To help encourage a positive frame of mind, it is important to look after yourself. Everybody practises self-care differently with some examples including:

  • maintaining good social connections and communicating openly with family and friends
  • making time for activities and hobbies you enjoy
  • keeping up a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting quality sleep and avoiding the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs to cope with stress
  • practising relaxation, meditation and mindfulness to give your body a chance to settle and readjust to a calm state.

TEM tip:

  • Follow the TEM Facebook pages for connection, health and exercise tips
  • Connect with friends that have similar interests.  Look for ways to engage in activities that stimulate your mind, not just exercise e.g. crosswords, jigsaws, card or board games
  • If you notice you are agitated, angry or generally not yourself; move from the spot you are in either outside, around the block, or make a call.  Changing your physical location even in a small space can help change your mood.
  • Have a look at the apps below for relaxation etc.  Follow some Instagram live exercise sessions.

Keep things in perspective

When we are stressed, it is easy to see things as worse than they really are. Rather than imagining the worst-case scenario and worrying about it, ask yourself:

• Am I getting ahead of myself, assuming something bad will happen when I really don’t know the outcome?

Remind yourself that the actual number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Australia is extremely low.

• Am I overestimating how bad the consequences will be?

Remember, illness due to coronavirus infection is usually mild and most people recover without needing specialised treatment.

• Am I underestimating my ability to cope?

Sometimes thinking about how you would cope, even if the worst were to happen, can help you put things into perspective.
