Bunsen Burners, Bubbles and Safety
The Year 7 students of 2020 at KSC have had a very busy start to their secondary school journey. There is a lot of information to learn when you begin in the Science Department, including how to be safe in the laboratory, learning the rules we adhere to in science, how to light a Bunsen burner safely so we can perform experiments, and how to think like scientists.
The Year 7 Like Minds students have already obtained their Bunsen burner licences, and are set to begin experimenting, thanks to the Year 8 Like Minds students and Mrs Witton for teaching them proper Bunsen procedures. Some great future scientists in the making!
Safety is of course a priority, and the Year 7’s have been investigating and acting out some safety rules. This will culminate into our “Mannequin Challenge” video, which each class will complete in the next few weeks.
To be a good scientist, asking questions and having an investigative brain is very important. Have you ever thought about bubbles? Mr Smith’s 7C asked many questions….
Why are bubbles round?
Why are they all different sizes?
Why do bubbles pop?
Why do bubbles have colour?
Why do bubbles sometimes float, but sink other times?
All these questions led to bubble investigations and having some fun blowing bubbles.
A great start to 2020 for Year 7, who will be ready to begin some experiments very soon!
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Year 9/10 Like Minds students are currently studying Co-ordination and Control and the Nervous system in Science. They excitedly dissected cows eyes on Thursday, identifying the eye components, investigating the functions of each part and how they help us with our everyday functions.

YR 11 PSYCHOLOGY
Year 11 Psychology students are currently studying the structure of the brain, and on Thursday, had to identify and label parts of a real brain. After identification of the regions/parts of the brain, they will research the function each of the identified structures performs.
