Community Engagement Activities

REFUGEE WEEK

On the last day of Term 2, the 24th of June, our Cultural Ambassadors attended Melton City Council’s Refugee Day Celebrations at the Melton Community Hall.

Our very own Si Ngun Aye was very well received as one of the key note speakers. She shared her migration story to Australia from her home country of Burma, as well as her dreams and aspirations.  She was engaging and very inspiring to the audience, specially the students from a local primary school.

Daphrose Tuyisabe, Charlotte Nagahesi, and Hope Niyonzima, members of Club Iteka, also performed with their peers. Everyone applauded their traditional Burundian dance.  It was a great day for all present, and we thank the Melton Council for having us.

CHANGING GEARS

The Brotherhood of St. Laurence supported our students through a 4 day series of workshops called “Changing Gears”. Here, the students learned and prepared for their L plates exam.

Congratulations to our latest L platers, Daphrose Tuyisabe, Rowaida Doar, Villani Hiram, and New Year Shingcum Lam!

VICSEG PODCAST PRODUCTION

As the Financial Literacy Program for Young Migrant Women came to a close, VICSEG had one last project for our students – they produced a very professional podcast!

Sakshi Sharma, Si Ngun Aye, Alyssa Sibayan, and Maua Ramazani Nicolas did a phenomenal job of interviewing their special guests. Watch this space for the release of their podcast, and learn all about budgeting, gender pay gap, and more!

EDMUND RICE BIKE RIDE HOLIDAY PROGRAM

Thanks to Edmund Rice Services and the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, we were once again able to take several of our students out to the fantastic land out at Mt. Atkinson for a day of biking.

Students from all bike levels were welcome and enjoyed a sausage sizzle lunch, and was followed by roasting marshmallows on the open campfire.  It was a beautiful day for bonding, and we’d like to thank our partners once again for the opportunity!

VICSEG BOWLING HOLIDAY PROGRAM

VICSEG New Futures held a bowling day for our students from the Financial Literacy Program and past scholars from the Inclusive Schools Program.  Let’s just say, I know who to invite onto my team next time, and that bumper guards are our best friend.

Thank you to VICSEG's Melissa and Adongwot for the delicious pizza lunch after.  Everyone had an excellent day!

CULTURAL DANCE WORKSHOP

We are extremely proud of our students, Si Ngun Aye, Daphrose Tuyisabe, Graham Su’a, and Lesa Mlebinge for tirelessly working with YLab Global to produce a Cultural Dance Workshop holiday program.

Thank you to Frank Newah-Jarfoi of the Melton Young Communities for supporting our young people with using their space, and for Woolworths Opalia for sponsoring the ingredients for the cultural food that day.  Each facilitator prepared delicious cultural food that was enjoyed by all!

Thank you to our dance facilitators that day, Club Iteka, Jericho Etepo, Moses Ione, and Deondre Su'a.

PINC FAMILY EXCURSION

Spectrum Migrant Resources held 6 weekly workshops at Staughton College in Term 2. The "Parenting In a New Culture" workshops are an open and safe space for migrant parents to meet and talk about the challenges of raising children in a new country/culture.

We finished off the workshops with a family excursion to Eynesbury's Winter Festival on July 6th. Everyone had a blast trying out ice skating and roasting marsh mallows over the open fire.  We hope to run this workshop again next year, so stay tuned!
