5/6 News

It has been an extremely busy start to our second semester and our beautiful 5/6 students have picked up where they left off, showing great maturity and work ethic. We were so impressed with the student lead conferencing which was an amazing opportunity for the students to own their learning and their goals, moving forward for the rest of the year. We thank you all for coming along and being part of this important process. Here is a snapshot of all the happenings in the senior school.

 MATHEMATICS

Students have continued to work in their different Maths groups with the focus still being on Measurement. We are so very impressed with the amount of students who identified their huge improvement with their times tables as one of their successes for Semester 1. The students have been focussing on this during our ‘Rocket Maths’ sessions where each Friday, the students have 5 minutes to answer 110 times table questions and if they get them all correct within the allocated 5 minutes, for two weeks in a row, they move on to the next level.

We are also continuing with a measurement focus, in particular looking at Mass and Time. Here is an example of some of the language we will be focusing on in our Maths lessons during our Measurement lessons..

ENGLISH

This term our focus has been on information report writing. The students have been writing reports based on our migration topic; talking about the First Fleet's role in the start of Australia's migration story. The students had to use their reading skills to gain information for these reports.

In these reports, the students have been using their grammar skills and trying to incorporate new vocabulary they have learned from our spelling and grammar lessons. We have be encouraging our students to focus on their grammar to enhance their writing through editing.

Inquiry - Migration to Australia

We have been exploring the history of Australian migration and the role it has played in building the multi cultural country we now have. The major focus we have had over the last fortnight has been the role the Gold Rush and the role it played in building the Australia we have now. The students have made posters about what life was like on the goldfields, the importance of the Eureka Stockade and how it still has importance to the way we live now. The students made a news report explaining what happened that fateful night on the goldfields.

Youth Leadership Program Using Public Speaking

The classes have been thoroughly enjoying developing their leadership and public speaking skills through the Youth Leadership Program. Each week students are selected to play different roles in the program and each student, over the course of the program, is given the opportunity to develop and present a speech about themselves. It has been wonderful to see the students go outside their comfort zones and show such wonderful confidence. You can be extremely proud of them, as are we.
