Junior School News

Prep 1 & 2

We thought we would get in early to mention Book Week, so students can start getting excited and begin to plan their costume. We love Book Week here in the Junior school, and the time has come to get excited about all fun that Book Week brings. The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) have shortlisted books for the 2022 awards. We will delve into and celebrate this rich literature during a fantastic week of dress ups, parades and and a special guest author talk. After two years of not being able to fully embrace this wonderful week, we are seizing the opportunity to bring our love of reading to the forefront.

The theme for this year's Book Week is 'Dreaming with Eyes Open...'. Students will be asked to come dressed up as their favourite book character or as something related to the this years book week theme.  Watch out for some fun teacher dress ups too. We will have our dress up parade on the 24/08/22 and the author talk on the the 26/08/22.

Prep News

Wow, what a week  for the Preps. I'm sure they will be exhausted come Friday (including Ms Maloney). We are so proud of how well the Preps have settled into our school and we love any excuse to celebrate their achievements. It's really is hard to believe that they are over half way through their first year of primary school! If you didn't already get the chance check out our school Instagram page, go to sacred_heart_sandringham to watch a reelshowcasing the day.

Respectful Relationships

Thanks to Mr Brown for coming up to Prep to teach us our Respectful relationships lesson. Mr Brown read us a book called Mr Huff and we discussed strategies we can use for when we get stressed.

During our small group reading lessons students have has a go at some tricky word games and puzzles, making closed syllable words using magnetic letters and stamps and using their iPads to practise their knowledge of single sounds on Literacy Planet.

A huge thank you to Fiona for coming into the class as parent helper and for taking part in the role play coffee shop. The kids absolutely loved having you in the class.

Mathematics

We have been looking closely at the number 100 (I wonder why?) The students have been counting to 100 and looking at what 100 looks like - thanks to our buddies for helping us count our items.

Communication Challenge

Learning to communicate is a key component of the Prep curriculum. Students are working on the skills needed to listen to others, take turns and to demonstrate attentiveness. All of which are part of building successful relationships.

1/2 News

During Respectful Relationships we too have been looking at what to do when we are stressed. Students were introduced to Wibbly. Wibbly gets worried a lot.  Students had to help Wibbly, by suggesting things they find helpful to calm down or to cheer up.

Religion

We have been looking at stories in the bible about outcasts and miracles. These stories include people who Jesus helped by embracing and supporting those less fortunate. This week we looked at the story of Zacchaeus. Tax collectors were not popular in Jesus’ day. By inviting himself to Zacchaeus’ house, Jesus showed his acceptance of someone who was regarded as a sinner and treated as an outcast. Students made a text to life connection by reflecting on times they have excluded others from their games.

Literacy

Multisensory Literacy

We have introduced a new spelling rule this week called the 'Rabbit Rule'. This rule is helping students remember when to double the middle consonant. The words must have one middle consonant sound after a short vowel sound and be 2 syllables.  Sounds complicated but students are really getting the hang of it. Ask your child about it at home and see what they can remember.

Writing

The 1/2s have been learning about opinions and persuasive writing this week. They have been looking at text structure and how to include stronger, more persuasive words in our writing. (We apologise in advance if they now come up with more convincing reasons to get the things they want).

Mathematics

The 1/2s have been exploring the connection between addition and subtraction. One of our learning intentions during our Mathematics lessons last week was, to solve subtraction equations using a the count on strategy.

Inquiry

We began our inquiry unit 'Our differences and our privileges' by looking at a video of Ms Rafferty, Mrs McGrath and Mr Blake's trip to East Timor a few years ago. We then looked at photos to compare the similarities and differences between our school and the the school in the village of Remexico.
