Wellbeing

August 2022

“Wellbeing” is a strange word, with many different meanings.  The Oxford English Dictionary defines “wellbeing” as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy”.  But here at NBC, we know that wellbeing has a different meaning to each of us, and the meaning of wellbeing can be a deeply personal concept and experience.

Over the next few months, our College Wellbeing Team will be talking with students to hear about how they understand wellbeing, the things that students are doing to stay mentally healthy and some things that they have learnt about wellbeing and mental health at NBC.

First up, Jarrah (Wellbeing Coordinator) spoke with Amna, Summer, Ryan, and Molly, who are amazing grade 1-2 students at our Tallis campus:

“What is Wellbeing or Mental Health to you? "

Amna – “Staying healthy”.

Ryan – “Being a student, being a helper”.

“How do you make sure you stay mentally healthy?"

Summer – “Eat fruits & veggies, drink lots of water, take deep breaths, brush my teeth, colouring in & play with my friends”

Molly – “Sleep early, eat fruits & veggies, exercise, use our focus plans”

“What have you learnt about wellbeing at NBC?”

Amna – “How to be ready to learn”

Summer – “Being ready to learn”

Ryan – “Stay safe, how to be calm and ready to learn”

Molly – “It will help you learn and be happy, and things are nice when you’re happy”

There are some great themes in the students answers today, being ready to learn is clearly important to the students at Tallis, and healthy habits (like eating well, and maintaining good sleep hygiene) is important too.

Our College Wellbeing Team will continue to interview students, and we hope that you might learn a thing or two from the young people here at NBC.
