Year 3 - 6 Community

August 2022

Term 3 has already had some great events, incursions and camps and we have only hit Week 4! It has been action packed so let’s begin.

SCIENCE

The 3 /4 students this term are learning about physical science with a focus on forces.  We have started the term looking at a number of forces and how they impact an object, either making the object move or stopping an object moving.

Professor Bunsen visited all the Year 3-4 students in week 3 and we all left the session with new understandings of different forces. Later in the term we will be using the design process to make a vehicle that moves!

Our 5 /6 students are looking at Light as part of their Science curriculum! They will be going on an exciting excursion to Scienceworks, seeing the exhibition: ‘Illuminate, how science comes to light’! Using the knowledge they have acquired from this excursion and their explorations in class, students will be creating their own experiments using light and writing a full explanation report.

MATHS

In mathematics, all students across 3-6 will begin the term with a focus on multiplication and division. For our 3/4 students, this is a new area of learning and they will continue this focus for the whole term. Our 5/6 students began this work last term, and, after consolidating their understanding of multiplication and division, will move on to fractions in week 4. Additionally, students will begin working on measurement skills, including length, area, mass, capacity, temperature, volume and perimeter.

BIG WRITES

This term we will be focusing on our VCOP Big Writes. Students in 3-6 will be completing a Big Write every fortnight. This is a writing task based on the work we have been doing in class and students will be supported in this process. A significant part of the Big Write process is called ‘Home Talk’. This is where students are encouraged to take the writing prompt or idea home and chat with their family about it. This can be done over the dinner table or driving in the car on your way to extra-curricular activities. It is a great way for students to really think about what they’re going to write about.

YEAR 5 CAMP

Year 5 have had a particularly exciting start to the term with their Year 5 Camp at Camp Wilkin in Anglesea. Students have learnt how to work together, problem solve and take safe risks through the many exciting activities over the 3 day camp. The year 5 students had an absolute blast! Thank you so much to all the staff who volunteered to supervise our students throughout this time.

Year 4 are heading off to Staughton Vale Camp for a night in August. They will be exploring nature and for a lot of students this will be their first camp and time away from home.

BOOKWEEK 2022

In Week 7, we are excited to finally be able to celebrate Book Week together onsite at school. This year's theme is ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’. Students are asked to come dressed up as their favourite book characters for the campus parades.

This year the emphasis for dress-up costumes is on make-your-own and make-do.  Masks are always a great idea for all students to be able to participate.

Check out this fabulous YouTube clip for some simple ideas using paper plates, wool and paint!
