From the Principal's desk

August 2022

Dear Community Members,

Term 3 promised to be a most exciting term as we look forward to completing our Whole School Review, our Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 students complete their course selections for 2023 - including the introduction of the new VCE VM and VPC models (LINK), our Year 12 students go close to finishing their content for their year, we as a group look forward to participating in whole of college Cultural Understanding and Safety Training (CUST) and we implement the long, long awaited industrial agreement.

With this much happening the term is sure to fly by and as always, the work we do will be flavoured with commitment and support to each other and the intrinsic desire to deliver outstanding outcomes and programs for our students.

School Review

As our school community is aware our whole school review will take place this term. This is a 'once-every-four-years' exercise and allows the school to celebrate achievements and identify work for the future. We will be supported through our review by experienced reviewer and former school principal Wendy Larcombe; challenge partners Janet Matthews - Principal at Grovedale College and Tiffany Holt - former Principal at Apollo Bay P-12 and current DET School Finance Support Officer our SEIL Robyn Marr and Barwon Area Koorie Engagement Coordinator Ilona Sliwa. Our review will continue with fieldwork days through late August and early September and will result in the college completing a new Strategic Plan for the next four years.

We look forward to sharing the results of thsi experience and work with our school community before the end of term.

NAIDOC Week Assemblies

What an inspiring way to start the term - celebrating NAIDOC week with our school community during week one of this term. This important week of celebration and awareness was made all the more special by a very moving and inspiring speech shred by NBC Alumni Ms. Sharelle McGuirk. Sharelle who is a past student of CSPS and NHS spoke of her journey to management in the DFFH and her experience as an indigenous student in the 70’s and 80’s.

Truly inspiring and a stark reminder of the important role we have as educators in ensuring the Indigenous perspectives we have in our learning programs allow for inspiration and connection for our students.

Wellbeing Camp

It is always great to have an ‘Inaugural’ and we had another one during the holiday break with a most successful Wellbeing Camp. Coordinated by our wonderful Wellbeing team. Students were treated to three days of challenge, self-discovery and exciting adventure as they worked through a number of engaging and eye-opening sessions.

A huge congrats to our team on the camp and we certainly look forward to this being a staple of our overall program for NBC students.

The Challenge Newsletter

The NBC Challenge is a special and most unique aspect of our wider school community and provides such a richness to our students and school community through philanthropic support and high-level networking opportunities for our students.

Goldsworthy Building Program

We are very excited that work has begun on the Goldsworthy project. These early works have so far proceeded with very little disruption, and we are hopeful the entire project goes to plan with the same level of fidelity. There is sure to be some disruption to our processes on the GW Campus as the project continues- whether this be parking, room changes, noise etc. Our builders are working hard to ensure this disruption is minimal, and any short-term pain will certainly be worth it for the long-term gain of our school community.

Year 5 Camp

It was so wonderful to see over 100 of our Year five students from all four P-8 Campuses head off on their 3 day Camp to Anglesea earlier this term. In what were cold but sunny conditions the students and staff were treated to a veritable cavalcade of fun and exciting camp activities. One of the real features of this camp is the opportunity students have to mix and create friendships with students across the college - an opportunity the students really lent into over the camp.

A big thank you to all staff who have given their time to support the camp - the students, families and indeed your colleagues are extremely grateful. Of note too - the college camps and excursion team have done a wonderful job in securing a number of cost-free camps for students as part of the DET - Positive Start initiative. A great way to get our kids out and about!!

Year 12 Oral Presentations

A key aspect of the Year 12 English course are the Oral Presentations students must present. This assessment allows students to speak passionately and importantly persuasively on a topic that is of importance to them. The quality of work along with the strong socially aware messages our students have selected again this year reinforces the high-quality young people we are privileged to work with every day.

Students performing at this level in Year 12 is a testament to the work of all staff who have supported them along the way so congrats to all!

VCAL Students Upgrade Staughton Vale

Take a look at his video to see the outstanding work students have completed on a MIni-Golf Course that adds wonderfully to our Staughton Vale camp site.

What started as an idea to contribute and give back to the college has helped to add so wonderfully to the environment at our SVOEC.

Congratulations to the VCAL team who continue to show how creative and committed our students are.

IMPACT Radio Show

It is exciting to share this work from our Year 9 IMPACT students. Students have been working over the past few weeks on an old-fashioned radio show complete with sound effects and exciting storyline. Take a listen to this really fun and exciting offering here.

3-Way Conferences

It was so great to see families back across all campuses as we kicked off our first face to face learning conferences in 3 years!!. It really has been such a long time since we last had the opportunity to sit down with families and discuss student learning and participation.

This return to face-to-face meetings helps underline the importance of strong family connections with school and we look forward to finding new and exciting ways to enhance this aspect of our work as we continue to return to normal programming.

This experience really does underline firstly the appetite our families have to engage in learning conversations with their child's teachers but also the importance of this shared responsibility for student achievement, engagement and connectedness.

Year 10 into 11 Course Counselling

Another example of the desire our families have to work in partnership with our school was the course counselling our Year 10 students experienced at Goldsworthy in week 3. Students and families were provided an outstanding grounding to make these important decisions for senior school as we look to introduce the new VCE VM and VPC models (LINK) in 2023. This support and guidance was on full show as staff worked so supportively to help students finalise their program decisions for Year 11. This is such a big step for all students, and we are incredibly lucky to have a wonderful staff team who work hand in hand with families to make this experience exciting (as it should be!) rather than daunting.

Year 3-6 Promotional Video

The next edition of our work to capture the voices and the opportunities our students enjoy through each of our SoLs was completed this week.

Take a look at what is a most engaging summary of our Year 3-6 program at Northern Bay College.

This installment follows our Prep - Year 2 LINK, and SEED LINK  editions.

Australian Cricket Coach visits NBC

At the start of August, the College was so fortunate to welcome Australian Cricket Coach - Andrew McDonald. The visit which was made possible through the Lords Taverners - a charitable organisation who have taken our school under their wing through the past 4 years, was such a special opportunity for our students to interact with such a high profile and inspiring leader. Andrew really was just so generous with his time and with the investment and interest he genuinely showed in our students and the programs he viewed. He then sat down for a Podcast with hosts Falk Davis, Stoofa and Riley Ward. Hear his and their great work here LINK.

Prep 100 Days

Last week our Prep students celebrated their 100th Day of Primary school with celebrations at all prep Campuses. This celebration is an extra special one this year as students have achieved this milestone completely on-site - the first cohort to do so this decade!! Once again, staff at NBC go the extra yard in celebrating this day with our kids through the dress ups and celebrations. Thank you!!
