Creative Arts & Languages

Hello - Bonjour - Buongiorno - Yaama

Languages at McCarthy

A group of students from Year 7, 8 and 10 have been working hard to present a poster displaying a ‘word of the week’ illustrated and written in the languages spoken by McCarthy students and their families. This is to acknowledge, promote and celebrate McCarthy’s cultural and linguistic diversity.

The students started working on the poster at the end of last term, and had chosen the word ‘sunflower’ as it fitted in well with Vinnies' sunflower quilt for the people of Ukraine.

On the poster are the words in the different languages, the flag of the country where the language is spoken, and the name of the language.

Fun Fact:  The students from India speak different languages: Punjabi and Malayalam, and the word for ‘sunflower’ is the same in Tagalog and Spanish (marisol), and in English and Shona (language of Zimbabwe)!

Very well done and thank you to Allyza, Anita, Arpitha, Charlie, Emma, Gurleen, Lam, Riza and Sophia for their wonderful work! And thank you to Santiago, Lynn and Thomas for their contribution to the poster words!
