VCE Awards Assembly

The mid-year VCE Awards Assemblies are the opportunity to celebrate the hard work and perseverance of our Year 11 and 12 VCE cohorts. Awards for presented under the categories of Academic Achievement (for the highest performing student in each subject), Personal Achievement (for those students demonstrating a positive attitude towards their studies) as well as Growth (for those students who have made the most growth in the subject from the beginning of the year).

A special round of applause must go to those students who achieved Academic Awards in a number of their subjects this year:

Year 12 – Cai Venn (English, Further Mathematics, History Revolutions, Literature & Legal Studies)

Year 11 – Hannah Dimic (Biology, Chemistry, Food Technology & Mathematics Methods)

It was fantastic to see so many students from across the two cohorts up on stage and being acknowledged for their hard work!

We look forward to seeing all of this study translate into some positive ATAR scores at the end of the year!

AFLW Lightning Premiership

For the past month, a select group of female students in Years 8 to 12 have been busily training and preparing for the AFLW Lightning Premiership competition hosted by the St Kilda Football Club. Each Thursday at lunchtime, the team have been refining their skills in preparation for a three-match round robin to be held on Thursday 18th August at the Linen House Centre in Seaford. The team at the top of the ladder at the end of the tournament will play in a grand final against another team from a different division at St Kilda’s home ground in Moorabbin. We wish the girls all the best in their matches and look forward to them bringing home the premiership cup!

GTAC Excursion

Recently, our Year 11 Biology students attended an excursion at the Gene Technology Access Centre(GTAC) in Parkville. The excursion was designed to enhance their understanding of genetics, pedigrees and punnet squares, the students worked alongside GTAC Science Mentors to use research-grade compound and fluorescence microscopes. The students used gel electrophoresis and created a pedigree to determine the inheritance of the disease PKU. The students had a great day and teachers were impressed by their excellent work and results!

Staff v Student Netball

The students have managed to claw back to 4-all in the 2022 Staff v Student Competition with a nail-biting, come-from-behind victory. The students took the early ascendancy and lead 5-2 due to excellent play and quality shooting from Meg Bown and Emily Smith, though the staff were able to score the following four goals straight to take the lead with thanks to the hard work of Ms Neophytou, Ms Karadeas and Mr Wright. With the game on the line though, it was intercepts by Baz Ashwood who dulled the staff offence and created scoring chances for the students who saw out a 7-6 victory. The competition next moves on to Charades, followed by a debate and then AFL to finish Term 3.

TRAG

Earlier in the term, Year 12 students from VCAL and VCE attended the Teenagers Road Accident Group (TRAG) educational presentation which is designed to promote road safety and to end preventable road trauma for the next generation of young drivers. This was presented by those who have experienced road trauma & its effects first-hand, and provided a critical and powerful message to students.

Taster Day

Taster day was a huge success this year thanks to the hard work of Miss Murphy and Mr Wright. It provided students the opportunity to view the many subjects McClelland College offers as they each showcased their curriculum. There were a number of highly engaging activities and displays on show for all attendees, including the VET SES Cadets program and a range of elective and senior school subjects.

Monash University (Peninsula) excursion

The Monash Uni trip was a fun opportunity to learn about many different elements of uni life such as the pathways into courses, residential services and scholarships. In the morning we heard a speech describing many of these factors that we then got to see in person by touring the campus. Later after lunch, we played a monopoly style game surrounding questions about university life. Of course, my team won because we're the best. Aside from a learning experience it was also a good opportunity to have fun with friends and get out of the classroom for a different educational experience. – Al Davies
