Introducing Norman our Therapy Dog

Introducing … Norman!!!

Norman is the newest member of staff who will be working in the wellbeing and Hands on Learning Space as a part of the Therapy Dog Program.

There are a number of recognised benefits from working or visiting with a wellbeing dog including:

·         reduced stress and anxiety, including decreased learner anxiety behaviours

·         improved physical and emotional wellbeing

·         improved self-esteem, empathy and interpersonal skills

·         improved relationship building and ability to pick up on social cues

·         improved attendance (for disengaged students or students at risk of disengaging).

Examples of activities students may engage in with Norman include:

·         petting and/or hugging the dog

·         speaking and reading to the dog

·         giving the dog commands that the dog is trained to respond to.

While Norman is looking forward to meeting with as many staff and students as possible over the coming weeks, he understands that there may be some people who are hesitant around dogs, or who may be allergic to his fur.  Please let reception know if you have any concerns in this regard.
