How can the Pathways and Transition office help you?

Apply Now- 2023 VETDSS Courses

Year 10 and 11 students who are planning to follow a Training Direct or Uni Transition pathway at John XXIII College in 2023 and/or 2024 are encouraged to consider applying to study a Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS) course at North Metropolitan or South Metropolitan TAFE. Places in NMTAFE and SMTAFE VETDSS courses are limited. Interested students are encouraged to apply to their desired course, online, as soon as application open. 

The 2023 North Metropolitan TAFE VET Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS) guide can be accessed here. Applications opened on 18th July and close 31st August 2022. 

The 2023 South Metropolitan TAFE VETDSS guide can be accessed here. Applications opened 1st July and close 31st August 2022. 

All students who apply to study a VETDSS course will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. Anyone can create a USI here. In their TAFE VETDSS application form, students should list Ms. Hedley’s details for their VET Coordinator. The application should take approximately 25 minutes. 

John XXIII College has relationships with several other private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that offer VETDSS.  Qualifications ranging from a Cert II to Cert IV are available in areas such as Electrotechnology, Business, Education Support, Fitness, Screen and Media, Nursing Preparation and more. Students and families are encouraged to get in contact with Ms. Hedley to find out more about courses run by private RTOs- private RTOs have a separate application process to North and South Metropolitan TAFEs.

Some of our most popular RTOs include:

• Fremantle Education Centre mostly the Cert IV Business, Cert III and IV Education Support and Cert IV Community Services
• Diamond Fitness Cert III and IV Fitness and Diploma in Sports Development
• Health Science Hub for health-related courses e.g. preparation for nursing, lab skills, animal care
• Mount Pleasant College have many art, media, music and design-related courses

Applicants are nominated by an educational professional, usually a school principal.

Female nominees are also eligible to be nominated for the Julia Gillard Women in Leadership Scholarship.

• If you apply early, you gain no advantage over those who apply later in the year. 
• If you are not sure what courses you want to do, get some free career advice from the Pathways and Transition office and your university of choice before you apply.

Before applying to study a course, students looking to engage in tertiary study at university (particularly Year 12 students) should spend some time browsing through university course guides to gain an awareness of all courses and majors of interest. Most universities add and/or change courses and course majors from year to year. Here are some links to the 2023 course guides for WA universities. The Study Assist website gives you an overview of what financial assistance they are eligible for when contemplating further education.

Uni Fees for 2023

All universities in WA charge pretty much the same fees. The UWA Fee Calculator is a good tool for estimating how much your course will cost.

Expect changes:

The new government will be releasing its budget in October. I anticipate that there will be significant changes in the Commonwealth’s contribution to university education. As soon as these changes are announced I am sure UWA will update its Fee Calculator.

Psych degrees attract higher subsidies

The UWA Fee Calculator page gives this information about subsidies for Psych courses:

Units in the following courses are charged at a discounted rate and are not displayed in the Fee Calculator for Commonwealth Supported students.

Alternative Pathway to Murdoch Uni: On Track Sprint

On Track Sprint will be a FREE 4-week program, conducted over the summer holidays after the completion of Year 12. 

Successful completion of this course provides an equivalent 70 Selection Rank.

Most universities in WA have already had their big open day but some are doing a second one later in the year. Careers with STEM magazine has posted advice on how to get the most out of either physical or virtual open days. You can check out the post HERE.

New Driller’s Offsider Job Ready Program

There is strong demand for driller’s offsiders in the resources sector. This Job Ready Program is a skills set designed to meet urgent demand for support in the drilling industry. Participants complete an industry induction and are provided with skills to work safely on site, apply first aid and CPR, work safely at heights, and operate and maintain a four-wheel drive vehicle.

NOTE: Young job seekers need to know that drillers look for resources in isolated locations where work conditions are strenuous, and the driller’s expectations of the offsider will be high.

August WA Training Awards Finalists Announced 

West Australian finalists for the 2022 Training Awards will be announced in August with the West Australian 2022 Training Award presentation being held on 21 September

METRONET Stage 2 Midland

Construction of the $5.6 million METRONET Trades Training Centre at our Midland campus expected to be completed in October 2022, with training commencing in Semester 1, 2023.

BHP Pilbara Rail Academy Trainees = 70% Women 20% Aboriginal

BHP is planning to employ 200 new train drivers over the next three years. 

There is a significant change in the gender balance in the train driver workforce with 70% of the trainees being female. Aboriginal workers are employed across BHP and 20% of the train driver trainees are Aboriginal. 

It is a 10-month course and there was strong competition for the traineeships.

$500 Construction Tools Rebate

$500 tool rebate from the Construction Training Fund available from July 2022 for apprentices! 

The Apprentice Tool Allowance from Construction Training Fund puts $500 back in the pockets of apprentices. Available from 1 July 2022 until 30 June 2023.

Balga TAFE campus to get a $40m upgrade 

Balga campus is getting a much-needed upgrade. 

This major capital works project will deliver significant improvements to this 50-year-old campus which has been known for its excellence in building trades training in the northern suburbs. 

The new facilities will include a “smart building” training workshop that will deliver emerging construction technology skills. 

There will be a wide range of courses delivered on the refurbished campus which will be completed in 2024. 

New auto spray painting equipment for Carlisle

The safety of workers will be improved by the new spray-painting equipment that is being installed at Carlisle TAFE.

As we become more aware of workplace hazards we are seeing more innovations that create a safer work environment. 

Carlisle has a history of partnerships with the panel beating and spray-painting industry and this new equipment will help the industry to modernise its practices and deliver beautiful finishes on vehicles.

South Metro TAFE – Associate Degree in Applied Technologies starting July

South Metro TAFE has partnered with The University of Western Australia to deliver the Associate Degree in Applied Technologies starting in July 2022.

Students will gain hands-on skills development at South Metropolitan TAFE and will use these skills on industry-facing projects at UWA’s test lab in their final semester.

MPA Skills offers Pre-Apprenticeships for Plumbing

A pre-apprenticeship is the first step to potentially gaining a full-time apprenticeship. It demonstrates to a potential employer that a candidate has a real idea of what the job is about and what is expected of them.

MPA’s aim is to make you employable which could ultimately lead to employment by our own Apprentice Employment division.

Busy Sisters - women in trades mentoring program

This is a Commonwealth government mentoring program designed to support girls and women in trade careers. The Busy sisters mentoring program runs over 6 months and provides weekly support from Tradeswomen. 

Bricklaying Apprenticeship Program 

With fancy bricklaying, the future of skilled bricklayers is looking good. This video is about a new bricklaying apprenticeship program

New Strategy for Women in Turf Management

Turf Management is one of the most gender segregated trades with women only representing 1.4% of the workforce. The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association has designed a strategy to encourage more women into the industry. 

The strategy includes:

• Raising awareness of options for year 10 – 12
• A regional industry engagement plan that connects schools with sport and recreation facilities.
• Supporting a Cert II Pre apprenticeship program.

Applications for Alcoa’s 2023 apprentice intake will open towards the middle of the year.

An Army Support Gap Year role is a unique opportunity for students to experience life in the Army, without needing to make a long-term commitment.  The skills obtained through the Army Support Gap Year program will provide them valuable work and life experience, which are transferable to civilian employment opportunities.  It enables Gap Year members personal and professional development for their next endeavour. 

In an Army Support role, recruits will learn logistic and task management skills to ensure the Army has the necessary supplies for exercises and humanitarian operations.  Gap Year recruits can experience what life in the Army is like in one of three rewarding Army Support Gap Year roles.  They may assist in the movement of supplies as a Driver, manage logistics as a Warehouse Coordinator, or become the point of contact within a unit as an Administration Assistant.

Cabin Crew (ADF Gap Year) 2023

Provide safety, comfort and in-flight service to passengers and crew on board specialised aircraft, while enjoying a fulfilling 12-month taste of life in the Air Force.  Air Force Cabin Crew play a vital role in ensuring the safety, security and comfort of military personnel and civilian passengers such as Government ministers, Australian and foreign heads of state, royalty, and guests of the Australian government, onboard an aircraft.

Planning a Gap Year for 2023

If you think a Gap Year could be a good option for you in 2023 you can find out about them at Youth Central which is a Victorian government site. The information about your options and what to be careful of is just as relevant to students in WA. 

• If you choose to take a gap year but think you might want to go to university later, you should still apply through the normal TISC process then defer for a year once you get offered a place. 
• If you would like to consider studying overseas, I receive advertising materials from Crimson Education which helps students to apply for places in universities in the United States. 
• Again, the Youth Central site has information on studying overseas, scholarships and links to further information.

Broadacre Harvest – Training and Jobs

You must have heard about the skills shortages in the agriculture industry. 

Farmers are predicting bumper harvests again and they will be looking for people to bring it in at the end of the year.

Year 12s may be eligible for the Broadacre Harvest Operations Skills Set program that is going to be run at Muresk twice:

• 12–16 September 2022; or 
• 3–7 October 2022.

2022 SCSA Year 12 Handbook Part I

Part 1 of the SCSA Information for all Students is out now. 

This is the one with:

• important dates, 
• how to use the student portal (you must complete the Student Declaration and Permission by 8 September)
• information about the WACEChecker 
• special exam arrangements
• how to meet literacy and numeracy requirements
• school assessments

You need to be familiar with the Year 12 Information Handbook if you are in Year 12.

YEAR 10 IN FOCUS

GENERATION research

Our Year 10 students have been invited to participate in the first year of a new longitudinal study of young people in Australia.  In 2022, the GENERATION study will focus on the activities and aspirations of Year 10 students – what they are doing now and what they think they would like to do in the future with study, training and employment. 

Each student who completes the survey will receive an individual summary of their careers interests, while the school will receive a summary report of the plans of Year 10 students as a group.  No individual student will be identified in the school report.

There are plans for another 10 years of surveys in this longitudinal study. Students will be asked if they are interested in participating in later years of the study.  If students agree to participate in later years, they will be asked to provide their contact details.  Please note that it is not a requirement for students to participate in later years, and all questions in the survey are voluntary.

All data will be kept strictly confidential and no individual student or school will be identified in published data or reports.

New University Admissions Information for 2025

This is the latest information, correct at time of going to print in June 2022.

This information is issued on behalf of the five Western Australian universities. Its aim is to help Year 10 students to decide on their senior school courses, so that they meet university admission requirements. 

This booklet applies to students who will be completing Western Australian Year 12 studies in 2024. It is relevant only for admission in 2025 and is subject to change without notice.

19 August Applications close ABCN scholarships for 2023

Year 10 students are invited to apply for ABCN mentoring and financial scholarships for the 3-year 2023 – 25 program. The scholarships are for exceptional students who face economic, family, or social challenges. 

Successful applicants receive $7,000 in financial aid over 3 years. Scholars will also be matched with a dedicated corporate mentor from ABCN’s extensive list of corporate partners. The mentor will work with the scholar to encourage school engagement and transition to further education and training; helping to develop skills, growth mindsets, aspirations, and connections. The program also enables workplace exposure for scholars who may never have had an opportunity to experience a corporate environment before this program.

School Based Traineeships in the Public Sector for 2023

The public sector School-based Traineeship provides students entering Year 11 an exciting opportunity to gain on the job experience through paid employment.

Over the 18 month traineeship students work towards a Certificate II in Government (Public Administration) which counts towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

Around July each year the Public Sector Commission calls for applications from Year 10 public and private school students and supports agencies with recruitment. Find out more below.

School Years 9 and above:  WAAPA Propeller Youth Dance Course

Challenge your contemporary dance technique, build skills in creative practice and choreography, collaborate with other young people passionate about dance and feel a part of a youth dance experience.

The course is designed for young people who are either intending to pursue dance as a career or who simply love dance and would like to continue to improve their dance skills. Each Term will culminate in a short sharing for family and friends.

River Rangers for Year 5 and 6 students

River Rangers is a primary school cadet program for students in Years 5 and 6.

It seeks to engage and educate the next generation of children to help us protect our local rivers. River Rangers allows students to actively investigate local issues and design, evaluate and share the results of their projects with other schools and the wider community.

Conservation projects undertaken by River Rangers include tree planting, litter pick-ups, bird and bat box building, biodiversity surveys, water quality testing and building native gardens.
