HUGHESY’S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS.
Hi everyone and welcome to the first edition of Wide world of Sports. This is the first one I have written since pre - Covid …so fingers crossed that we get through the incredibly busy schedule which we have in term 1.
Inter School Tennis.
Last week , on Friday a team of four girls and four boys from year six represented the school at tennis down at Our Lady Star of the Sea.
Our entire District has had a major overhaul which has seen us become a district of only four schools, O.G.P.S, Leopold P.S., Drysdale P.S. and Our Lady Star of the Sea, hence the destination of the tennis. Let me say thank you to the parents who assisted in getting our team to and from the tennis, this may become a more regular process with covid rules still in force.
Our kids, Amber Pallero, Lara Forward, Maddy Adams and Jaz Durbidge representing the girls along with Otis Wood, Lennox Crabtree, Noah Grindell and Gus Sutton for the boys. All our students presented and played extremely well, with Lisa Grigg the organizing teacher from O.L.S.S commenting on their excellent behavior. Otis Wood came second in the boys competition and will go on play in the Division level events. Very well done Otis and good luck.
Upcoming Events.
Tues. Wed. and Thursday, February 23,24 and 25.
Emily Suttcliffe from Geelong Football Star Academy (soccer) will be taking soccer skills lessons with all year foundation, 1 and 2. This is a free activity for the school for which we are very grateful. Two years ago Emily presented a program to our whole school which was extremely well received.
Week 7,8,9,and 10.
I have been very lucky in procuring another large grant from School Sport Victoria. In the past these grants have paid for tennis, surfing, soccer and basketball clinics and activities.
During weeks 7,8,9 and 10 year levels 4 and 6 will be attending skill clinics at the Ocean Grove lawn bowls club. Here they will be coached by Owen Clarke an accredited lawn bowls coach. Other club members who have Working with Children accreditations, including an Australian champion will assist with the lessons. Notes for this activity will be coming home soon.
Tuesday, March the 16th.
Inter School swimming sports.
Teams have almost been finalised. It has been extremely difficult to put together this team due to the fact we have not had competitive swimming sports since 2019, previous years competitors have been bumped forward and others invited to present times. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions the sports regulators have slashed ten seconds off every qualifying time at every level in every event, this has made it an event for elite swimmers.
I would like to thank all those mums who went to the trouble of timing and testing their children, sometimes in vain.
Notes for members of the swimming team will arrive home soon along with instructions as to who can attend.
Tuesday March 30th. Girls AFL Football.
All girls in year five and six are eligible to show an expression of interest in playing in this competition which will be held at South Barwon Reserve on Barwon Heads Road.
O.G.P.S cross country- Thursday 1st. of April.
Held as usual at Ocean Grove beach near the new Surf Lifesaving club. I have been impressing upon all year three and four ( 2 klms ) and year five and six ( 3 klms ) the need for some running practice before the event. Hopefully we will be allowed to have parents to support their children in their efforts.
Parents please note that Team Vic Trials applications are open in the following sports :
AFL Football, Basketball, Cricket, Soccer, Netball, and tennis.
Students cannot turn 13 before 31/12/2021. Year six students only. Three applications for each sport from each school can only be entered. Applicants should be considered well above average or elite to be considered. Final decisions if needed will be made by myself and certain teachers. Please note that the schools involvement is limited to promotion and endorsement of the best nominations.

As you can see it is a very busy term, and there may be even more additions before the end of term so, let’s keep everything crossed for an incident free term 1 from here on in.
