Grade Two Fortnightly snapshot
Weeks 5 and 6
Dear parents and carers,
Thank you for your support with the sudden change to home learning this week. It did take us by surprise! At the very least it presents opportunities for the students to be flexible and resilient.
Please ensure your child has a book bag to protect the take home books they bring to and from school.
In reading, we continue to teach strategies to stay engaged in reading, such as keeping your mind in the book, being curious by asking questions as you read and keeping an open mind to trying new books. They will also know that when their mind in is the book it means they are engaged in the book.
We will also focus on genre. Students will begin to recognise that books can be classified according to genre, beginning with 'fiction' or 'non-fiction'.
Students will also learn to create their own reading goals.
They will also become more proficient in retelling a story. They will learn to include the setting and retell the important events.
In word study, we will continue to practise using the reading and spelling tools and revising vowels and consonants.
The students will use the reading and spelling tools to practise the rule "qu". We call “q” a “sooky-la-la” because he won’t go anywhere without his buddy “u”.
It is important that the students continue to practise the codes. Click on this link to practise the codes at home.
In writing, we will continue to develop writing stamina. Like reading, there will be an emphasis on genre. Students will become more familiar with and begin to explore writing different genres of texts, with a focus on personal narrative.
Students will also be working towards setting up a writer’s station in the classroom. This station will allow students to have access to several resources and inspiration for drafting and publishing their own writing.
We will continue to focus on the same place value leaning intentions, as well as introducing the concept of expanding numbers. (i.e. 245=200+40+5)
Our learning intentions are:
Our success criteria is:
Who We Are: Self-awareness promotes positive relationships.
The students will continue to develop the ability to identify and label emotions. They will explore the intensity of different emotions and learn to recognise the difference between a big problem and a little problem. We will plot these on a class catastrophe scale. The students will learn to use the Zones of Regulation, which is explained more below.
As part of our unit of inquiry ‘Self-awareness promotes positive relationships’ we will introduce the students to the ‘Zones of Regulation’. This is a child friendly, easy to understand framework designed to foster self-regulation and emotion control. We would like students to recognise what ‘zone’ they are experiencing and use strategies to help them regulate their emotions.
Please check the Student Planner for the weekly homework.
