Student Well-being

Community Spotlight: Year Prep Community

In Year Prep we have been learning about how everyone is different!

We learned that we are all good at different things. Some children are good at sport, while some are good at dancing or singing! We have tried a range of different activities to see what we enjoy best.

We have also been learning to make new friends. We talked about how it is important to be kind and caring towards others and we can always help each other inside and outside the classroom!

Another important saying in Year Prep is ‘sharing is caring'. We have learned that it is super important to share things in the classroom to make sure everyone feels included.

Have a look at our amazing paper plate faces that show how we are all different and good at different things!

Christian:

'I am good at playing Minecraft' and I am good at playing Mario Kart!'

Alexis:

 'I am good at swimming!'

Bianca:

'I am good at painting and colouring in!'

Practicing Mindfulness

In its most basic form, mindfulness is a mental discipline that helps us get better at focusing on the present and what surrounds us, rather than spending too much time thinking about the past or worrying about what the future will bring.

Like any new skill, it takes time and practice to develop and perfect.

Six benefits of mindfulness:

  1. Reduce worries, anxiety and distress

2. Create a sense of calm

3. Learn how to relax and regulate emotions

4. Improve concentration and increased productivity

5. Develop a sense of empathy and connectedness

6. Enjoy better health and sleep

How can you practice mindfulness?

Mindfulness Colouring:

Colouring is an activity that sparks the logical and creative aspects of the brain into action. If you think of colouring like a mental exercise, then you're keeping your brain active, healthy and improving coordination. When colouring, the brain remains in control of its thoughts and employs both sides of the cerebral cortex.

Smiling Mind:

Create a free Smiling Mind account to introduce practicing mindfulness in your home.

It is a great tool to encourage being calm and still after what can sometimes be a very busy day!
