Year 2 News

We’ve been busy in Year 2!!

The Year 2 students have had a great start to the Year. We have spent some time setting up our classroom routines and procedures and we are amazed at how capable our students are. They have been following directions well and completing all set tasks.

Literacy

During our Literacy sessions, we have been spending time launching the Daily 5. Daily 5 is a literacy framework that instills behaviours of independence, creates a classroom of highly engaged readers, writers, and learners, and provides teachers with the time and structure to meet diverse student needs.

The Daily 5 consists of:

1. Read to self

2. Read to someone

3. Work on Writing

4. Word Work

5. Listen to Reading

The students have enjoyed practising the expected behaviours during Read to self and Read to someone.

During our Writing sessions, the students have enjoyed learning how to construct a letter. They have written several letters to their teachers. There was a buzz of excitement this week, when the students wrote a letter to their pen pals at Beaumaris Primary School. This activity was our first Learning Task. The students are looking forward to receiving a letter back from their pen pals in the coming weeks. Hopefully later in the year, we will have the opportunity to meet up with our pen pals in person.

SMART Spelling

The students have settled in to our SMART Spelling routines very quickly. We are pleased with the activities the students are completing at home during the week while they are learning their weekly spelling words. Friday the students complete three dictation sentences and complete their weekly spelling test. We are so proud of their SMART spelling knowledge.

Maths

This week for Maths, the Year 2 children have been busy making resources for their individual maths kits. Each child was given 9 icy-pole sticks and they had to glue on 10 beans onto each stick. Each stick is showing a group of 10. They also have 9 loose beans for ones and 9 hundreds.

In the maths kit the children will also have a number line, a 120 number chart, a place value chart, ten frames and MAB hundreds, tens and ones.

We also have been looking at how the position of numbers effects their value. The children played a game in pairs, where they rolled a dice which has either a hundred, ten or one on it, five times. They then had to record their number as extended notation on the sheet provided and the person with the highest total won a point. For example if they rolled 3 hundreds, 1 ten and 1 one they would write it as 300 + 10 + 1= 311.

The students have also been looking at the yearly calendar, seasons and months of the year. They were presented with a jigsaw puzzle calendar that as a class they had to put back together, using their knowledge such as number of days in the month and certain special events.

Inquiry

This term our unit of Inquiry is How We Express Ourselves. Communication is influenced by feelings and emotions. The students will be competing the Inside Out Unit, which is based around the movie of the same name. They will be introduced to the five characters, Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust and Fear and learn how to manage their own emotions.

The students will write their own class definition from each emotion, identify how to recognise the various emotions through their own body symptoms and write about a time when they have felt that emotion. After each emotion has been completed, the students will watch Art Hub and make their way through a guided drawing class learning how to draw each character.
