Year 1 Inquiry News

The Year 1 students have now completed their first Unit of Inquiry exploring “The decisions people make influence their relationships with each other”. The culmination of the unit was a group activity where the students demonstrated their IB learner profile attributes of reflective inquirers and most importantly good communicators.

The students were set the task of designing a collaboration of their “Ideal Classroom”. The students were encouraged to use their knowledge around what makes a safe and positive learning environment, as well as to think creatively.

We were impressed with the confident manner in which each team member presented to the class. Our next Unit of Inquiry is always a favourite. We will be exploring how “The weather effects our lives and environment”.

HANDWRITING

Wow! What an enthusiastic start to our structured handwriting lessons we have had so far this term. The Year 1 students have started the term learning the first letters of the ‘A Family’, using the Victorian Modern Cursive Script. The 'A Family' are the lower case letters of the alphabet that are written in an anticlockwise direction.

The students enjoy listening to Mrs Vawdrey explain the correct letter formation, direction and use of dotted thirds. The children practice anti-clockwise patterns using their fingers in the air, on the interactive whiteboard and then on their personal whiteboards. Once back at their tables the students completed two pages of their handwriting book and focued on correct sitting posture, arm position and pencil grip.

Please ask your child to teach you all about writing the letter 'd', or ask them to explain the dotted thirds and the importance of not having floaters or sinkers within their handwriting.
