Infants news

What a busy few week the Infants students and staff have had to start the year off! Everyone enjoyed getting in the pool last Friday and taking part in our Whole School Carnival and it was wonderful to have many parents and friends come along to cheer our swimmers on in both pools. We also enjoyed welcoming many of our families back into the school again at our Welcome BBQ on Tuesday – it was great to catch up with those who could make it.

This year the Infants Department is pleased to have Miss Corrine Birney teaching Year 1/2 again, and Miss Downey teaching Year 2/3. Sharing the wonderful Kindergarten class this year is Mrs Proudford Monday-Wednesday and Ms Brougham Thursday-Friday. The students are fortunate to also be supported in class by our many wonderful support staff.

Kindergarten

These last two weeks have seen our Kindy students flying along with their learning. They are beginning to read in small groups and have started taking readers home to enjoy sharing and reinforcing their learning with their families. Please make sure the readers are returned each day so that new ones can be sent home.

Our Kindy students enjoyed their first cooking lesson last week, making a colourful cous-cous salad. It looked as though many of them have been cooking at home before coming to school by the looks of the good stirrers and mixers we had! We look forward to cooking again next week with some of the produce from our garden.

Year 2/3

Year 2/3 have settled in well to the routines and groove of our classroom, we have quickly bonded as a class and are helping each other with learning and making sure everyone is included. We are helping each other to follow our school Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus of 'engaging in our learning' which is reminding us to start work straight away and stay focused and to keep trying, even when it's tricky.

We have started working on improving our spelling and punctuation and focusing on writing persuasive texts for the first half of the term. We have discovered that some words can be extremely powerful when used in our writing.

We are starting to learn our times-tables, so counting by ones, twos, fives, and tens is helping us with this. We have already looked at collecting and graphing data, which involved graphing our birthdays, favourite fruit, and favourite ice cream flavour, which of course was mint! This week we have moved on to study 2D and 3D shapes.

In Science, we have started learning about the sun and we have many questions we would like to explore.

In Personal Development & Health (PDH), we are focusing on how to keep ourselves and others safe. We are all looking forward to starting swimming for sport this week and learning about being safe around the water.

We are excited to see what 2021 will bring and what we can learn together.

Miss Downey I Year 2/3 Teacher

Year 4/5

It has been a fun and busy week in the 4/5 classroom! In maths we have been learning about Data and Graphs. We used our birthdays to create a giant graph on our classroom floor. We also talked about the importance of collecting data before starting our graph to make sure we included everyone, and we used tallies to make counting easier.

In science we have been learning about Life Cycles and have been comparing different animals with ourselves, looking at what different mammals can do at various stages of their life. We had a wonderful time at the swimming carnival last week and are looking forward to learning about water safety over the next four weeks during sport.

Year 5/6

We have had a fast-paced start to our learning in the Primary area this year. We have been working hard at making positive decisions in the playground and the classroom - specifically focusing on 'actively participating in the task the teacher has asked you to do' from our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus.

We had a fantastic Swimming Carnival on Friday. We battled the weather in the afternoon, but we got all the main events completed before the rain came. Hopefully, next year we will have great weather and we can enjoy more novelty events. Congratulations to all champions, runners-up and both Blue and Green houses for a fantastic day.

In the 5/6 classroom, we have finished a unit of work on 'The Day She Stole The Sun' - which is a book written by students at Cobargo Public School about the devastating bushfires of 2019 and 2020. We created poetry, artworks and reflected on the impact of bushfires on local communities.

We have begun a unit of work on 'Adaptation' in science, and we will be looking at how humans and animals adapt to their surroundings over extended periods. In Geography we are exploring Asia and its rich history, learning a lot about the culture and traditions of various Asian nations. Our classroom is looking better and brighter every day as more artwork is completed - we have some incredibly talented artists in our midst!

We would like to welcome Lochlan and Ruby to our class also - we look forward to a fun year of learning together.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

Last week was ‘Healthy Lunchbox Week’ so, for the first two weeks back, Kindergarten to Year 6 focused on looking at what it meant to be healthy. We discussed what a healthy lunch looks like and what kind of foods give us long-lasting energy levels to help keep us moving and concentrating in the classroom. We then prepared chicken and couscous salad with honey mustard dressing. Many students were intrigued to taste the couscous as they had not heard of it before!

Couscous and Chicken Salad

Ingredients:

Salad	Dressing
1/2 cucumber	¼ cup Dijon mustard
1 tomato	¼ cup honey
½ capsicum	¼ cup cider vinegar
1 spring onion	¼ cup olive oil
100g sweet corn	Salt and pepper to taste
¼ cup shredded chicken
150g couscous

Method:

Chop up all vegetables (except for the corn) and put into a bowl.
Cook chicken, let it cool down and shred into small pieces and add to the bowl of chopped vegetables.
In a jar, pour all dressing ingredients in and shake until well combined.
Pour couscous into a bowl and pour boiling water over the top. Let it sit for 5 minutes and then stir with a fork to break it up.
Add couscous to the chicken and vegetables and mix together until well combined.
Drizzle dressing over the top and serve.

New School Jackets

The Boorowa Central School P&C has been busy organising a new school jacket which will be phased in over the next 3 years as part of our uniform.
