Stage 4 Technology Mandatory

Currently, Year 8 are learning about how to refine their portfolio skills in preparation for the rest of the year for Technology Mandatory. They are revising the design process and how that looks when compiling information for their portfolios which becomes a part of their assessment task, along with their final design idea. The first half of this term they are participating in a ‘Delicious Dairy’ unit of work where they learn about the dietary needs for teenagers – specifically, the dairy needs and are to then create a small recipe booklet demonstrating their understanding of how to cater for the recommended daily intake of each food group. In their practical lesson, they cooked mini cheesecakes. Their next practical lesson will include them preparing and cooking one recipe from their assessment task.

Stage 5 Textiles Technology

It is extremely exciting to be able to start a new school year with Textiles up and running again! One of their first attempts of fabric decoration was marble dyeing which involves using shaving cream and fabric dye to create colours and patterns and then laying the fabric over the top to soak up the dye.

You then scrape off the shaving cream and leave it to dry. You should be left with a marble design on your fabric. We will be looking into other methods of fabric decoration to contribute to their future assessment tasks – stay tuned!

Year 12 Hospitality

Year 12 have been practising their coffee making in preparation for their ‘Serving Espresso Beverages’ assessment coming up next week. They will also be demonstrating their baking skills by cooking a selection of baked goods, including M & M brownies, scones, brownie biscuits and apple and cinnamon slice to serve with their coffees. Wish them luck!

Stage 4 Science

During the first weeks of science, Stage 4 have been developing their scientific method skills. This includes authoring a scientific report that goes along with a practical experiment.

Students were required to determine the boiling point of an unknown chemical substance and then write a scientific report based on their observations and collection of data. The report includes a title, aim, hypothesis, materials, method, results, discussion, and conclusion. The process has been long but will ensure that the student's skills are ready for future scientific pursuits in high school and beyond.
