Rugby League at Staughton College

Friendly lunch time touch football games has seen Staughton starting to develop a Rugby League program for both the boys and girls.

Players are getting really competitive, motivated and are learning teamwork, decision-making, passing, running and support play.  As we build our stamina and skills with lunch time drills, our teams work with our coaches to develop tactical and strategic thinking, problem solving and understanding.

The coaches are first aid trained and have a background playing and supporting the game.  A key focus is on giving constructive feedback and correction and make sure that the players achieve reasonable success at every session. Rather than telling the players what to do, coaches are asking the players about their performances and work together to develop corrective actions.

We are working to establish consistent teams, that we hope will go on and play interschool competition.   We want our players to practice the whole skill set required and to develop an understanding of tactics and game concepts, while enabling the performance of skills in a realistic environment.

Included with this, we envisage the program will build its credibility to improve our boys and girls not only as players but also to develop them as students and good citizens of the community. It is clear to our players, that academic and behavioural standards must be met in order to play Rugby League.

It is only very early into its development, however if we can continue to create positive social change across three key focus areas; health and wellbeing; respect and responsibility, it is hoped the rugby league program will make a positive impact on our community.
