Why study Health?
It impacts everything – our Physical, Social, Mental, Spiritual and Emotional Health makes us the people that we are. Comparing the Health status of Australians and other population groups globally is necessary for us to create a sustainable future for all.
Favourite teaching moment here at MBSC?
Sharing the success of Yr 12 students when they achieve a good results that they have worked really hard for – building the confidence of all learners during discussion is very rewarding.
What is it about teaching that inspires you?
Developing positive relationships with students to encourage them to take risks with their learning and build confidence in their ability to understand their potential. Watching students grow academically and socially as they progress through the year levels is pretty awesome.
If you got the opportunity to teach anywhere in the world at any school (all expenses paid) where would you like to go?
I’ve taught in quite a few places around the world and Mt Beauty is my favourite place. The students are the best behaved and well mannered of any students I’ve ever taught. We are very lucky to live and teach here.
Has anyone stolen your lunch from the lunchroom?
Brad steals snacks from my desk drawer almost every day.
Best study tips?
Complete as much work in classtime as possible, listen to advice from your teacher and create a balance with exercise, work and study.
What language would you like to learn one day? Why?
German – I’d love to travel extensively there and interact with the locals
Tell me about a time when you felt like a hero at work?
When a student (who is currently in yr 12) told me in yr 10 Health that it was their favourite class of the week and other students chimed in to agree. It brought tears of relief that I was doing something right!
Describe the purpose of your job to an alien from another planet
To inspire smaller humans to have a crack at learning new stuff, to build positive relationships with other humans and interact in order for all to achieve their academic potential whilst growing into kind humans. It is a huge responsibility and a massive privilege to work with the future of our world.
If you were given 10 Million to help solve a world problem, what problem would you choose and how would you contribute to the solution?
Poverty & Education – provide safe drinking water and sanitation for all across the globe and ensure that all citizens have access to education. This promotes sustainability as those who are educated have the ability to obtain jobs and earn money which contributes financially to the national and global economy (that sounded very much like a H&HD practice exam response but is also my truth!)
What was your 1st job?
Delivering newspapers – then I worked my way up to customer service at the newsagency
Best thing you have eaten this year?
Satay beef noodle soup from my favourite restaurant in Melbourne
Place you would like to visit next?
Going to Singapore and Thailand next week. Would love to explore Egypt and return to the French Alps where we got engaged.
What are you reading? (book/magazine/website)
Maggie Dent parenting books
Favourite sport?
Whatever my kids are playing depending on the season – currently AFL footy and netball
Have you ever gotten really lost? What happened?
I have no sense of direction so it is a regular occurrence for me! Google maps is amazing!
