Start speaking to people about their lives growing up, and you soon hear someone mention Youth Exchange and how it was a life changing experience, whether they went overseas, or hosted an international student. Mount Beauty Rotary has had a long history of hosting international students as well as sending many of our students overseas. Harri Silvester is currently on a year long exchange in Italy, thanks to the generous support of Rotary.
Mount Beauty Rotary will be hosting an international student from Chile for a year, beginning about the middle of July. Roberto, from Chile, will be studying at Mount Beauty Secondary College, and there is an opportunity for local families be part of this wonderful program by hosting him for part of his stay. Students are normally allocated to three or four families during their stay, and all expenses are covered by the local Rotary Club. I encourage you to read the article “Opportunity to host an international student” in the student exchange page of the newsletter and consider applying.
An information session will be held at school on Wednesday 24th May at 7pm, where you can speak directly with local families whose lives and children’s lives have been enhanced by being part of this wonderful program.
Our international student on a private exchange staying with the Borrell family, Noina (Suchanard) from Thailand, finished school today and will be flying home on Sunday. Noina was at our school for 8 weeks and joined in with the Year 10s in a range of classes. Although a quiet student; she will be missed by the friends that she made during her time here.
If your child has forgotten, or needs something during the school day, we ask that parents please come in via the main front doors and go to the Reception Office on arrival. This forms part of our child safety measures to keep all students safe, and help us to know who is on site. While we live in a small community, not all staff know all family members and so this will help to prevent any misunderstandings.
For those who attended the 11am ANZAC Day Service, they would have heard Callum and Ellie speak about what ANZAC Day meant to them, focussed on the experiences of service men and women on their return to their country after the Vietnam War.
I received a lovely letter from Melbourne today, complimenting our students on their address, research and delivery. The couple who have attended the service in Mount Beauty for the past few years, found this year’s service to be more relevant due to her husband being a Vietnam Veteran in the first Australian Taskforce (1 ATF) 1966 – 1967. Of interest was an article that was attached about a flag that is now on display in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, signed by her husband and the other platoon members, as a memento of their time in Vietnam, which can be read below.
