Numeracy Fun in VM

Year 11 VM Numeracy CAT 1 “Scale to Size - F1 Track”

The mission was for students to work in groups of 4 to create a section of a scale model of a Grand Prix Circuit. They used recyclable items from their homes that were manipulated into scale structures for their section of the track and circuit. Students looked into two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes and objects as well as reflection, symmetry and reflection, patterns and technologies that create and manipulate simple two-dimensional shapes and scale to sizes.

This was a fun activity with many students saying how much they have enjoyed completing the tasks and were engaged in their learning of Numeracy.

To top it off we took the students to the Australian Grand Prix on Thursday the 30th of March, which was a great opportunity to see the items that had been making on their models in real life. And of course, to see some race cars in action.

Year 12VM Fringe Festival

All Year 12 students were tasked with research, developing and creating an original film entry for the first ever Fringe Film Festival at McClelland College. The theme, ‘Rise of the Machines’, was evident throughout the film submissions and the introductory march and performance by Year 12 students. We had great attendance on the night in the PAC and it was fantastic to have our parent/carer community come on site for such a positive event. Congratulations must go out to Ms Lindemann, Ms G and all of the Year 12 students for pulling this event together with grace and enthusiasm.

College Captains Training Day at RSEA Park + Swimming Carnival

Congratulations on the 2023 College Captains for your hard work and dedication already this year! Representing VM well at this Training Day and the College Swimming Carnival in Term 1. Bring on Term 2 for more positive representation!

Alfred Hospital P.A.R.T.Y. session

Our Year 11 cohort took part in an engaging community-based program as part of their Personal Development Skills subject.  Run by the Alfred Hospital, the P.A.R.T.Y Program, also known as the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program is a dynamic and interactive injury awareness and prevention program which utilises true stories and experiences to show the impact of injury. Participants engage with paramedics, doctors, nurses, allied health practitioners, patients and their families in environments such as hospitals, schools and performing art centres.

The P.A.R.T.Y program at The Alfred provides participants with an authentic experience of creating insight into the consequences that patients and their families are faced with as a result of risk-related trauma. P.A.R.T.Y. aims to provide participants with information that will enable them to recognise potential injury-producing situations, make prevention-oriented choices, and adopt behaviours that minimise unnecessary risk. For further information, please visit www.partyalfred.org

The feedback from the students on the session was overwhelmingly positive and we hope to run this program face-to-face in the future. Well done goes to Ms Lindemann for being the chief organiser of this event and to Roz and the Wellbeing team for being on hand to assist with any issues that arose for students.

Open Night

This is a HUGE night on the College calendar and our VM students represented with style. We had students catering, delivering food, running tours, making coffees and running our Formula 1 track. Big shout out must go to the barista crew for busting out over 500 hot drinks in 90 minutes! What an effort!

Curriculum Update

What a great start to the VCE Vocational Major for McClelland College! The curriculum is jam packed full of applied learning opportunities and the assessments have been top notch. We have had students completing yoga sessions for PDS, fully researched Shark Tank pitches for Literacy, writing children’s books on difficult themes, building an F1 track in Numeracy, preparing our vocational spaces for Open Night in WRS alongside all of the work being completed in the TAFE and workplace settings.

Well done! We hope you are feeling the love as our wider community and we hope that we can work together closer as the year progresses.

REMINDER - Our focus for Term 2 will be largely on Structured Workplace Learning (SWL). This is the work placement day of our program each week. In the next COG, you will meet Amy. She is our new VET and SWL Co-Ordinator and will be helping us to RAISE THE BAR and increase our numbers of students currently completing work placements.

If you think you would like to take on a VCE VM student in your workplace - please get in touch! 9789 4544 and ask for Amy in the VM office.
