Maths Olympiad and Games

Each year St. Anthony's engages in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) where students in Year 5/6 take part in competitions designed to stimulate and challenge thinking. The competitions focus on problem-solving strategies and strengthens students' mathematical intuition. The Olympiad and Games competition comprises of 4 competitions across the year with the first one starting next week.

Students are challenged to think of different ways to solve the five problems given. Here is an example of the type of problem the students are faced with.

APSMO Problem of the Week

Petrol Price Comparison

To compare petrol prices (cost/volume) across countries, you need to know the exchange rate for the currency (we use AUD) and use the same unit of volume (we use litres). Last week, regular petrol in New Zealand was selling for 2.859 New Zealand dollars (NZD) per litre, while in the United States regular petrol was selling for 4.699 US dollars (USD) per gallon. Which was the less expensive? (Use these conversions: 1 gallon = 3.8 L, 1 USD = 1.37 AUD, 1 NZD = 0.93 AUD)

Number Hive Maths Game

One way to engage your child in Mathematics at home is to play Maths Games together. One great game for older students that I have stumbled across recently is Number Hive. This is both an online game and mobile app.

Number Hive is a multiplication strategy game that helps students build mathematics understanding, mastery and confidence through deep engagement.

The game is a great way to get students learning multiplication facts. You can play online against random opponents, host a game with friends and family or practice against AI. The year 5/6 students have loved using this in the classroom and ask to play whenever there is a chance.

MathXplosion

Are you looking for an educational way to engage your child using technology?

I stumbled across 'MathXplosion' episodes on ABC iView and was instantly captivated by the short episodes focusing on different areas of Maths.

The program is an entertaining and funny maths-short where 'mathemagician' Eric shares 'secrets' from the not-so-hidden world of Maths, such as measuring the height of trees using your thumb! But make no mistake, it's not magic, it's Maths! The three minute episodes are available on ABC iView.
