"From the College Archives"

The last edition of “From the Archives”explained the reason the various Houses have a patron and why the House feast day is on a specific day. Readers may remember that the feast day is usually on the anniversary of the patron’s death.  There are two House feast days in May: Glowrey (May 5th) and Marian (May 24th ). Mary Glowrey, Servant of God, was an Australian woman who entered religious life after she graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Melbourne. She felt called to minister to the people of India and travelled to India in 1920. She never returned to Australia. She died in Bangalore, India, on May 5th, 1959.  It is believed that Mary Glowrey was the first professed religious woman (a member of a religious order) to practise as a doctor.  House Leaders of Glowrey at the Cranbourne Campus have been Ms. Gina Goss (2012-2015); Mr. Jason Blackburn (2016-2017); Mrs. Mary Armstrong (2018-2022) and Ms. Mady Allan (current).  Mr Jason Blackburn and Ms. Mady Allan (nee Bolch) are both past students of St. Peter’s College.  House Leaders of Glowrey at the Clyde North Campus have been Mrs. Jodie Connell (2014-2017); Ms. Rebecca Stewart (2018 and 2021/22); Ms. Karen Williams (2019-2020) and Mr. John O’Sullivan(current).  Marian House also celebrates in May. There are several Marian feasts throughout the year. So, there are a number of dates to choose from. May 24th was chosen as the feast day for the House because it is the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians. It is under this title that the Blessed Virgin Mary is recognised as the patron of Australia.  The date of the feast was formalised by Pope Pius VII in 1815 to give thanks for his release after having been imprisoned by Napoleon, Emperor of France.  House Leaders of Marian House at Cranbourne Campus have been Mrs. Romi Bennett (2012-2015); Mr. Matthew Laurie (2016-2017) and Mr. David Bardi (2018-current).  Marian House Leaders at Clyde North Campus have been Mr. Greg Furlong (2014-2017); Mr.Andrew Sambell (2018-21) and Ms. Courtney Ross (2022-current).
