ONLINE RESOURCES FOR ENGLISH MEDIA ISSUES

Oral presentations are a key feature of the English curriculum in Years 7-12. Students are usually required to choose and present a point of view on an issue that has been debated in the Australian media.

The Library now subscribes to the online database, Echo Education which is useful for finding and selecting accurate and reliable information. Echo Education at www.echoeducation.com.au provides background information on a range of issues, direct links to news articles, video links as well as arguments for and against. Some of the current issues covered on the site include the current debates about vaping, e-scooters and more.

Login username and password details have been posted on the Compass news feed. Please reach out and contact me at georgia.flaskas@education.vic.gov.au if you need further assistance navigating your way around the site.

PUBLIC LIBRARY ACCESS TO ONLINE NEWS

There are many reliable Australian daily news sources that are free including SBS www.sbs.com.au/news, ABC News www.abc.net.au/news, The Guardian Australia www.theguardian.com/au and The Daily Aus www.dailyaus.com.au

However, some of the daily newspapers require subscriber access to read articles. By joining the Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries network, students can read digital copies of The Age daily newspaper and other electronic databases at www.yprl.vic.gov.au. Simply click on ‘Join’ and add your personal details to become instant members.

To access articles from the Herald Sun, students will need to visit the public library in person and connect to their wi-fi network. Students will also need to visit the library in person if they wish to borrow print books.

These resources are particularly useful for keeping up to date with what is happening around the world and are useful for all subjects, particularly English and Humanities.

NEW BOOKS

We have received lots of new books this term and we have many more on order. Check out the carousel of new books at our catalogue Library Solutions (drop down menu on Compass under Favourites) or our New Books shelf in the library.

Here is a small sample. We will send a more detailed list in the next newsletter.

VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE

A reminder that all Year 7 to 10 Lalor North Secondary College students have been registered to participate in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge along with over 300 other schools throughout Victoria. Login details were distributed during the Year 7 to 9 fortnightly library reading periods.

To complete the Challenge, students will need to read 15 books and add these to their online record. A minimum of 10 books must be selected from the Victorian Premiers’ Challenge and the remainder can be Choice books. Students can include picture story books, graphic novels, non-fiction books and novels.

Students will receive Quick Notes and go in the draw for some prizes later in the year if they complete the Challenge. Each student will also receive a certificate signed by Premier Daniel Andrews.

Ms Georgia Flaskas

Teacher Librarian

Hello, I'm Teighan!

I've been really enjoying working at LNSC library.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Ancient World Studies and a graduate certificate in information management (libraries).

As for my hobbies, I like drawing, sewing, crocheting and video games. Unsurprisingly, I also love reading! I like graphic novels, manga, sci-fi, mysteries, and romance. I am currently reading 'This Is How You Lose the Time War' by Amal El-Mohtar.
