Becoming a Confident and Involved Learner
The children at Oak Flats Public School Preschool are becoming confident and involved learners. This can be seen in the way the children celebrate their achievements and persist with tasks to find a solution, as well as finding ways to be assertive when they recognise unfairness. Becoming is a focus of our curriculum document: "Being, Belonging and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework". It is wonderful to see the children revisit the activities that interest them. This helps the children to build upon their knowledge of how things work in the world around them. In the sandpit, a big interest recently has been building a pipe with plumbers' pipe and tipping water into it. This has taken the children a great deal of problem solving, communication and teamwork. As educators we aim to ask questions and pose situations that get the children thinking, rather than just showing them how to fix the pipe.
Another example is an interest in building with blocks. Currently building houses with the large outdoor blocks, working out how to twist and combine the specialty duplo, building with large outdoor Lego bricks and using the indoor block area have become regular interests for many children. The children are now also extending this interest by leaving their constructions to revisit the next day. The children have worked out that displaying the word "Stop" on a sign, stops others from packing up their work - or at least we hope it does! This has caused several children to seek out stop signs in the environment that they can copy, which also helps their literacy skills.
To support each child's confidence at Preschool we also ensure that everyone is accepted and supported. This can be done by showing an importance for languages, cultures and religions. We sing songs in different languages (as best as we can), welcome each other in different languages, participate in cultural activities, for example by doing Tai Chi. Children grow and develop through their culture so it is important that their culture is accepted and valued at Preschool. If there is any way that a member of your child's family would like to help us to recognise your culture in the Preschool please contact as so we can discuss this further.
As you can see, the children are learning so much about what they can do and how to get along with others, please look through our photos for some great examples of our confident and involved learners!
