Koonung students perform well at Rockfest 2018

On a cold winter's morning on June 19, nine very talented Koonung  musicians made their way to Templestowe Secondary College to perform at the 2018 RockFest .

Bands from as far away as Ararat and all over the Eastern region came to take part in this festival of Rock and Contemporary Music. Eighteen bands participated. Music from all genres such as pop, rock, metal, gypsy, jazz, funk and folk was played.

Koonung presented two bands. The first band performing was

“Sonder” with Benji Chung on Lead Guitar, Arjun Tickner on Rhythm, Stanley Liau on Keyboards, Tom Shelley on Bass and Koetsu Sakamoto on Drums. This five piece instrumental band impressed the audience as they performed a variety of repertoire from Progressive Rock to Jazz Fusion to Melodic metal. The judges comments were; great musicianship was demonstrated by all the band members with the band creating a good bedding for Benji’s “phenomenal guitar work”  and building dynamically with him. Benji’s blistering solos earned him an award for Best Guitarist!

Congratulations Benji!

The second Koonung band was “Ocean Bourne” with Jamie Foo on Keyboards, Benji Chung on Bass, Jeremy Creasey on Guitar, Koetsu Sakamoto on Drums and also special guest; year 8 student Ryan McDonald also on Drum. The vocals were confidently performed by year 10 student Elisha Punay.

The judges comments were: the band performed a cool and challenging choice of songs with a tight rhythm section. Elisha’s vocal rendition of Jackson Five’s “Who’s Loving You” had the judges saying “Wow! Vocal is right up there!” Jamie Foo’s dextrous keyboard work – jumping between piano and synth was admired and appreciated and earned Jamie best keyboard player. Congratulations Jamie!

Our Koonung bands played professionally and did us proud.

Thanks to Joshua Verco, David Forward and parents that helped with the transport of students and equipment.

Congratulations to all of the members of the band on their hard work and for putting on such a fantastic and memorable performance.

Look out for their CD later on this year!

Best keys Award - Jamie Foo and Best Guitarist Award Benji Chung

Unit 3 Food Studies

In Year 12 Food Studies, we explored the science of food, focusing on the chemical reactions, cooking methods and functional ingredients. We completed a number of practical activities including Summer Quiche, Sweet Bread Plait, Apple Tarte Tatin, Fresh Berry Mousse and Choux Pastry.  Throughout the process of these practical activities we documented and investigated each stage of the recipes.

We photographed these stages to use in our written report. Each recipe provided different and challenging processes for us to experiment with. We looked at caramelisation, gelatinisation, aeration, dextrinisation, the maillard reaction, coagulation and denaturation. We also explored the physical and chemical properties of the ingredients. For example sugar is used in aeration, preserving, tenderising, moisture retention, to reduce curdling, for sweetening, to create a crisp crust, to provide colour and as an activator. We all enjoy working in the wonderful kitchen to create and learn new and challenging recipes.

2018 Arts/Technology Week

Arts/Technology Week was a real buzz with lots happening throughout the week……we were entertained by John Wanner and the Swing Band, the KSC Concert Band and David Forward, PBL performances organised by Sian Taylor and engaging drama activities run by Julia Hodson.

David Foote designed  an amazing chalk drawing  in the Amphitheatre which was completed by the students throughout  Arts/Technology Week. Kirby Sens ran a super creative Surrealists Dreams workshop.

Stuart Rowe and Amy McLellan invited students to attend their Dreams installation workshop and Zart Art volunteered and ran a workshop on Dream landscapes. Sandy inspired students to produce amazing mandalas through her workshop.

We had a Dreams Cupcake competition which was organised and judged by Allison Hart and Kelly Szlachetko and an Arts Competition based on the theme of Dreams.

Our annual cryptic questions were popular as Richard Leask aimed to baffle the students with his hidden clues.

Students created Arts / Technology works which were inspiring, skilled and innovative….from  Picasso portraits and mini mannequins to  self-portraits and one point landscapes to  cushion covers and phone pouches to stencil art and photography to wooden spoons and food products to still life, one point perspective names, two point textured birdhouses and paper couture mannequins…………WOW what a week!!!
