Houses/Interschool Sport Report

A busy Term 2 in Sport concluded with the Year 8 Interschool Sport Whitehorse Division Competitions on Thursday 21 June.

The Boys and Girls Badminton teams (coached by Mr Carter) had victories over most other schools but could not defeat the strong East Doncaster teams.

The Boys and Girls Soccer teams (Mr Mangonis and Ms Hodson respectively) came up against tough opposition on the day. Even though we did not win any matches, the students tried their best and enjoyed themselves in ideal sunny conditions.

Earlier that week, on Tuesday 19 June, 20 Koonung students from Years 7-12 competed at the EMR Cross Country Finals at Yarra Glen Racecourse. Conditions in the morning were very foggy and cold (1 degree celsius) but this did not deter our students. There were personal best times recorded and gutsy efforts in heavy conditions. By the time the sun shone through just after noon, Koonung had won the 15 Year Girls event (Anna Berrell) and got a 2nd placing in the 15 Year Boys event (Foad Jemal Hassen). Congratulations to both students who have qualified for the SSV State Finals at Bundoora Park on Thursday 19 July. A huge thank you to Dr Greg McKie who assisted with finish judge duties on the day and drove the bus to and from the venue. Thanks also to the parents who made the 45 minute trip to support their children/our students.

On Friday 15 June, the Year 7 Whitehorse Division Competitions took place for Soccer and Badminton. The Boys and Girls Badminton teams (Dr McKie) were very competitive, losing out only to East Doncaster SC. The Boys A and B Soccer teams (Mr Mangonis and Mr Tuffnell) and the Girls Soccer team (Mr Anderson) battled bravely in showery conditions but were unable to qualify for EMR Finals.

Thanks to all staff and students who participated and supported the Sports Program this term – I hope that it was highly rewarding for you and that you will get involved again in the very near future.

Looking ahead to Term 3, there are 4 main events/competitions:

  • Interschool Sport Whitehorse Division Competitions (Years 7, 8 and Intermediate) for Table Tennis, Basketball and Hockey
  • Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals for teams that won their division competitions in Semester 1
  • State Cross Country Finals on Thursday 19 July

A reminder that the House Athletics Carnival is on Tuesday 17 July (first week back in Term 3).

If any parent can assist with duties on the day, I would be grateful if you could contact me by email.

Finally, I encourage you to check Compass News Feed on a regular basis to keep up-to-date with all matters related to Sport. Please ensure payment/consent is finalised 3 business days before any sporting event you have been selected to compete in, otherwise you will not be permitted to attend the competition.

James Elward awarded Pierre de Coubertin Award

Congratulations to Year 12 student, James Elward, who was a worthy recipient of the  Pierre de Coubertin Award at the MCG last week. Olympic swimmer, Mack Horton, presented the award to James.

The Pierre de Coubertin Award recognises secondary school students who demonstrate values which are consistent with the Olympic Movement through participation in sporting activities.

Each nominee must participate actively in the school's physical education program with a consistently positive attitude and must have represented the school in a sport.

Award recipients are also invited to attend an Academy Day (held in each respective State) which provides the opportunity for students to meet Olympians, workshop Olympic issues and learn about of the International Olympic Movement and includes an official Awards Ceremony.

Anna Berrell continues to dominate in sport

Anna Berrell (Year 9) represented Koonung SC in the 16 Year Female All Schools State Cross Country Championships at Bundoora Park on Saturday 16 June. She came 16th out of 68 girls and her time was 15 minutes 23 seconds, an excellent time for this distance, especially for someone who does not run competitively. Congratulations on a fantastic result Anna!

Anna has been selected to represent Victoria in the Under 15 girls soccer team at the Soccer National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour between 16-20 July 2018. We wish Anna and her team all the very best for this event.
