KSC Literacy Program

Literacy Program

Our Years 7 and 8 students are nearing the end of their lessons in the Kurunjang Literacy Program. It has been an intensive year of structured lessons around developing key skills and strategies to improve and challenge students’ reading comprehension abilities.

Our research based program identifies the essential prerequisites each student requires to make meaning from texts. Depending where students sit on the continuum of literate competence, a range of instructional techniques, in addition to development of automaticity in translating letters and words into spoken language, are required to build strong comprehension skills.

The content of the reading materials used in the program are not the main focus but rather the skills required to make meaning, learn and remember information. This means that strategies and skills are regularly repeated and practiced until those skills become second nature.

It is imperative that students actively participate and practice the skills learned through the literacy program. Students who adhere to the structure of practicing skills, contribute during the learning process, and read regularly tend to improve dramatically.

This year a number of students made significant gains in their reading comprehension skills because they persevered and practiced. Some students made from three to six years growth in their reading age ability. This is truly celebratory news and for this, we will be recognising those students at the college’s Awards Evening on December the 14th. If you receive a letter of invitation, know that your child had done well and we are proud of them. We look forward to celebrating their success at the Awards Evening with you.
