Wellbeing

It has been a busy return to school this term with the focus continuing to be reestablishing routines and healthy habits. It has been wonderful to see students stepping up to their challenges and getting involved in a variety of activities centred around connecting with others.

Mindfulness Mondays have been a welcome reprieve for many students in their busy schedules, allowing them the time to slow down and participate in some relaxing mindful activities.

I have had the opportunity to facilitate some Wellbeing workshops in classes this term. In Year 7 Positive Classrooms we learnt about the skills involved in ‘active listening’ and why it is important for deepening connections in friendships/relationships. The students put these skills into practice by ‘speed dating’ each other in lines and trying to learn something new about the person opposite them by using their active listening skills. The focus of the Wellbeing workshop in Year 9 Live Life was ‘Positive Coping Strategies’ where the students explored a range of activities that can be proactive and helpful when experiencing stress e.g. listening to music, mindfulness activities, exercise, breathing exercises, sensory toys etc.

The Wellbeing Action Committee (WAC) has also kicked off this term! Students self-nominated at the end of last year to be involved in this committee and their goal is to continue to improve the sense of wellbeing of the Koonung community. The meetings have been dynamic and filled with interesting reflections and ideas. New members are welcome to join. A suggestion box located near the Wellbeing area has also been created and we welcome all ideas to enhance the wellbeing of the community.

Lastly, Brainstorm Productions facilitated a live performance on Friday 25 March for the Year 7’s called ‘The Hurting Game’ focusing on online safety, digital reputations, peer pressure and positive relationships. It was a very engaging performance and the students thoroughly enjoyed it!

Have a safe and happy holiday break!
