REC News
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week students participated in our Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) as the start of our Lenten season.
Our learners enjoyed sharing pancakes with their peers, cooked by our chef extraordinaire Mr Stewart. Traditionally during Lent, Christians would give up tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat (some Christians continue to do so). Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to eat them and what better way to do so than with a delicious pancake! Shrove Tuesday is exactly 47 days before Easter and comes from the word ‘shriving’. Shriving means listening to someone’s sins and then forgiving them. In the past, Christians would use the day to confess their sins.
On Wednesday, our school celebrated our first Mass of the year with Ash Wednesday. During the Mass, everyone receives the Ashes as we remember that we are dust, and to dust we shall return.
Ash Wednesday also represents the day we begin our Lenten promises and follow the tradition of fasting, almsgiving and prayer as we remember the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert being tempted by the devil. We are proud of how our students represented themselves during our Ash Wednesday celebration and look forward to learning more about the Lent and Easter seasons during Religious Education Lessons.
