Years Three/Four News

Spelling

In Year 3/4 we have been learning about homophones. A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word but they are spelled differently.

We began our investigation by reading "I'm Australian too" and exploring the homophones "their", "they're" and "there". Students researched the origins of the words - did you know that "there" is an Old English word meaning "in or at that place"? There is also a version in Old Germanic and Middle Dutch!

Students have explored a range of texts and brainstormed lists of homophones they know. Students made their own sentences using homophones and then illustrated them, even making a class book. Using an inquiry approach in spelling helps students apply their learning to real-life situations, allowing them to transfer their knowledge about words into other areas such as writing.
