Here we are at the end of term again. It has been a wonderful term and the students have all responded so positively to being back at school for the new year. I am very proud of our student leaders and the work they are doing – watch out for a special project early next term. I am also so proud of our new foundation students who have just completed a term of Primary School! We have had so many special events, special programs and celebrations including our wonderful Harmony Day last week.

MAT Life Skills Program

This term our grade 6 students participated in a Marital Arts Life Skills Program once a week for an hour. This program was delivered by the wonderful TESSA Martial Arts experts and the students focused on developing resilience, self-belief, confidence, problem solving and grit. At the end of the course they all spent time in a final session breaking boards. I don’t think most of them believed they could do it and the look on their faces when they achieved this goal was priceless.

Eastwood Primary School

This term our Rangeview students have been learning about hearing ability diversity and how students with hearing impairments learn. We have learnt some basic AUSLAN and two of our student leaders – Maeve and Xavier – participated in a mini excursion to Eastwood Primary School and Deaf Facility where they met some students with hearing loss and learnt lots about another setting. They have prepared a wonderful presentation on their visit and this will be shown to the whole school at the first assembly in Term 2.

Harmony Day

We celebrated Harmony Day here at Rangeview last Friday and it was a wonderful display of our cultural diversity. Students (and staff) came in costumes of their heritage or orange and we started the day with the whole school making a giant smiley face on the oval. We then moved into a special assembly with members of Eastwood PS in attendance. We heard from our three wonderful choirs and we paraded our costumes. The Rangeview students then moved off to take part in activities which celebrated harmony and diversity with their buddies. The 5/6s and the Foundation students made flags of the student’s countries of origin with cultural celebrations on the back. These are displayed in the senior hub and look glorious. A big thank you to all of the staff and the parents who put the costumes together – it made it such a positive and successful day.

The Fathering Project

Next term Rangeview is launching The Fathering Project. The Fathering Project is a secular, research based charity. It is a model being adopted by many of our local schools which encourages Dads (or another significant adult) to get together once a term at an event. Each year two of the events are for dads only, and two are for dads and kids together. Events might be dinners, BBQs, bowling, hiking, bike riding, even camping on the school oval! The ideas will come from the dads and kids themselves.

This week you will be receiving an invitation to the launch event - BBQ and Meet Up - on Monday 26th April at 7pm. This is for dads only (or uncles, grandpas or significant adult) and not for dads and kids. If no father figure is able to come then of course, mums are welcome.

We hope this is the beginning of a wonderful new initiative for our school community.

National Breast Cancer Foundation

Some of our ex-students are raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This is due to a family member passing away in February this year. Please see the link for more details or to donate. Our thoughts and strongest condolences go to the family at this time and Rangeview is looking at making a donation also to this very worthwhile cause.

School Holiday Event – FREE Skateboard Lessons

During the April school holidays Whitehorse Youth Services are offering free skateboard lessons for kids and young people aged 8-25.

We will also be running a free BBQ lunch for everyone from 1:00-3:00pm

When: Thursday 8th April

Session 1, For Beginner’s: 2:00-3:00pm

Session 2, Some Experience: 3:00-4:00pm

School Holiday Event: Gamer Week @ Youth ConneXions

In the spirit of Healthy Gaming we are running a week-long event at YC where we have a spotlight on a new game each day.

Monday 12th – Smash Bros

Tuesday 13th – Mario Kart

Wednesday 14th – Pool and Table Tennis

Thursday 15th – Just Dance

Friday 16th – FIFA

Time: 2-5pm

· All level of gamers welcome, even beginners!

· There will be prizes for positive gaming behaviours, so everyone has a chance to win! We will also have some info on healthy gaming habits, sleep and gaming, stats, and where to get support if gaming becomes an issue.

· No registration required, just need to be between 12-25 years old.

· Other games will be available throughout the week such as: card games, board games and arcade machine.

· Snacks provided!
