Regional Tennis
The Year 7 Girls tennis team were the first team to represent the school at regionals this Term, after progressing through from Term 1. The girls arrived at school nice and early to beat the traffic as they made their way to Dendy Park in Brighton. They were in excellent spirits despite the morning chill. Arriving with plenty of time to warm up the girls were well prepared to compete against some experienced players. After losing out to Brighton in their first match from some strong serving, they displayed grit and resolve to beat Mentone in their second game. Unfortunately, this was not enough to see the girls progress to the next round. Nevertheless, the girls had a fantastic day out and fueled their desire to compete again next year and try to further their success this year. As always, the girls reflected the core values of responsibility and respect embedded within the culture of Cranbourne East Secondary College. Huge congratulations to making it to regionals, well done.
Unfortunately, the Year 8 boys regional tennis tournament a week later was postponed due to bad weather. Despite this set back they remain eager to compete when the tournament is rescheduled.
Victorian College Basketball Championship
Our Year 9/10 Intermediate Boys Basketball team went out to Knox State Basketball Centre to play in the Vic College Championship. Coming up against Berwick College and King David School we started slowly against the bigger King David School and couldn’t find a way to come back. A reset prior to the Berwick game allowed our team to find a way through their man-to-man defence, and ultimately more scoring chances. Huge defensive performances from Janakan and Noah kept us in the game and eventually it was Enrique and Shirlayne’s scoring that won us the game.
The next round of games were rematches of the first and our boys weren’t willing to be stunned again by the bigger and stronger KDS. A quick tactical change and some strong work inside the paint got us out in front. Wairua, Mangok and Shirlayne started nailing their shots and that was it. A 2nd round win. Our final game against Berwick turned into a nail biter. A Berwick win would see a 3-way tie for 1st, a Cranbourne East Win would end up with us on top. Well, the game lived up to the hype. Back and forth for 24min and it was Berwick that were able to land the winning shot and a 1-point win. A tense 15min wait for the ladder to be released ensued. It came out, pinned on the board. Cranbourne East through to the Semi Final.
The Semi Final saw us play Flinders College and a spirited start kept Cranbourne East in the game for a short time, but the talent and fitness of Flinders took charge and subsequently the scoreboard ran away.
A disappointing finish on the day but a fantastic result for the players and our school. This was the first time a team had entered this competition and a Semi Final result was way above anyone’s expectations.
Regional Cross-Country
On a cold and drizzly Thursday morning, 46 students were shuttled from school to Casey Fields to participate in the regional cross country. The students were competing against students from Hampton Park, Lyndhust, Cranbourne, Alkira and Narre Warren P12.
Optimistic and in high spirits about the challenge ahead of them, the under 16 students faced a 3km track around the multiple ovals situated at Casey, while the over 16’s faced a grueling 5km track.
The pockets of sunshine were taken over by drizzles of the rain as our students were put through their paces in a warm-up to ensure students were adequately prepared to give their best performance on the track.
Coming up in Sport
Week 8 is a huge week for sport, with 32 teams going out. Coaches have been working tirelessly to squeeze in training sessions, before, during and after school to prepare students. The sheer volume of students involved in these sports reinforces the significance of sport in fostering student engagement. For many, this will be the highlight of the year.
Monday 7th June sees the intermediate and senior soccer, netball, badminton and AFL teams take on the neighboring schools in a round robin style tournament. In addition, the Year 7 and 8 teams head out on Wednesday 9th June for a shot at the prize.
At CESC, we share a common moral purpose: “Giving every student every opportunity to exceed their potential by providing a high-quality pathway to success”.
Kind regards
