Tradespeople are often at the forefront of creating, building, installing, and repairing all things from big to small – from a small circuit board to a huge naval ship!
They are right in the thick of it, however, it’s not all dirty, physical work! While there is some of that, Australia’s shipyards are some of the most advanced in the world, so you’ll be working with a range of high-tech machinery to get the job done.
Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry will require a huge number of skilled tradespeople to help design, build and maintain the Navy’s ships and submarines. There are a lot of different trades needed, meaning there is something out there for everyone! The areas that will be in the highest demand in the shipbuilding industry are:
Heavy and Light Fabrication: This can include performing a wide variety of fabrication tasks such as spot welding, laser cutting, welding steel, and working with other materials.
Mechanical Tradesperson: This involves applying a range of mechanical trade techniques to assist with the construction, installation and testing of naval components.
Electrical Tradesperson: They are responsible for a variety of electrical trade techniques such as installing, repairing, replacing and/or maintaining wiring and control systems onboard naval vessels.
Click here to learn more about these roles.
Are you suited to becoming a Tradesperson? Are you more of a hands-on type of person? Don’t want to be stuck behind a desk all day? Then a trade might be the type of job for you! You’ll need to enjoy being physically active while also having good practical and problem-solving skills.
Here are a couple of things you might enjoy if you’re suited to this kind of work:
Where can I work as a Tradesperson? All the major companies involved in Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry (such as BAE Systems Maritime Australia, Naval Group Australia and ASC) will need Tradespeople. The smaller companies, which supply goods and services into the big companies – we call these the supply chain – will also need thousands of tradespeople for their work.
How do I become a Tradesperson? Each different Trade pathway will require its own specific qualifications. To become qualified, you will need to undertake an apprenticeship. The great thing about apprenticeships is you get paid to learn!
There are many opportunities to move up and progress in your career as a Tradesperson. The job you start might not be where you end up.
This infographic explains some of the different pathways you can take to become a Tradesperson in the Australian Naval Shipbuilding Industry: |
