GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre)

The Forensic Science classes visited GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre) in Parkville Melbourne at the end of Term One. At GTAC we had to solve a "murder case" of the lead singer of the band 'Fingerprint'.

We had to use a tool - the micropipette to move DNA from the suspects to an electrophoresis gel.  When all the DNA was transferred it was then placed into a machine to analyse to see which DNA matched the killers.

Once this was completed it was time to look over the results to compare the DNA found at the murder site to the suspects DNA. We also looked at blood typing and compared the blood groups of the suspects to that found at the murder site. Using the results of both of these tests we were able to identify the "killer". A great day was had by all.

Thank you to our Forensic Science teachers Mrs Dwyer and Mrs Yang for organising the excursion.
