The weather has been very refreshing and uplifting with the sun shining for our first weeks back to school.
Hearing Australia is back onsite!
It was great to have the Hearing Australia appointments up and running again and we welcomed our audiologist Eloise back to Mount Erin. We will now continue with our visits twice a term. We will use these sessions to work with students to better understand their hearing loss, talk about their technologies and troubleshoot any difficulties that may arise. We have set up junior and senior sessions for our students to join as well as the whole cohort throughout the year. Please contact the DEC if you have any questions.
Hampton Park Secondary School Staff Visit
Last week we welcomed three staff from Hampton Park Secondary College. They came to visit our centre to observe how a Deaf Education Centre (DEC) works and the inclusive practices we have within the classroom for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. It was great to visit and talk with our students about how the DEC operates within the mainstream classrooms. As we walked around the College, we talked about the best learning spaces and technology for our students, as well as teaching strategies that greatly support our students' learning. These include:
- captioned media,
- teacher facing students when talking to the class,
- good lighting in the classroom with minimal glare,
- low noise levels in the classroom as sounds can interfere and feedback with the hearing tech.
The Hampton Park staff are now taking the valuable information they gained from us here at Mount Erin, back to their College to provide PD for staff to improve their work with the DHH students at their school. They have also invited us to come and see them at work with their students in the future.
Cross-Country
Congratulations to all our DEC students who participated in the Cross-Country last week. Cameron, Jarrod, Cleo, Kenny and to Shaylee who went along to support everyone. It was fantastic to see you representing the College. Special mention to Cleo who came 1st in her age group and 3rd overall.
Y9 Passion Project
Well done to Locky for completing your Y9 Passion Project. You worked really hard on your subject “Rayman” the video game, and put together a great interactive display. Here is Locky teaching Sarah how to play the game. Great work!
