Year 6 Report

Welcome to Week 8!!

It is so hard to believe that we only have a few weeks left of Term 4.

I want to start off by saying how enjoyable our ‘Virtual Camp’ week was last week visiting our Nation’s Capital.  I am so proud of the enthusiasm our Year 6 students showed during each of our lessons that the Year 6 teachers worked hard to plan and present to the cohort.

The Year 6 students were given a ‘Virtual’ experience of the many places we would have visited whilst attending Canberra Camp.  We explored some of the historical landmarks including HMAS Otway (Holbrook), Dog on the Tuckerbox (Gundagai), Ned Kelly Gang statue (Glenrowan) - sites that we would usually stop at during our travels.

Students engaged in a fun-filled Parliamentary Program ‘Parliament of the Wizards’, which gave them the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a member that holds a seat in our government's system.  Each student had to design their own electorate, create bills and get them passed through the Wizard Parliament.  The students had to think about adjoining electorates, and what necessities were needed to make their electorate a more appealing place to live.  Each class then had to come up with a name for their country, create a coat of arms and a national anthem.

The Year 6’s also attended a virtual lesson run by the PEO (Parliamentary Education Office), where they learnt about our system of government, how we make and amend laws and how we as a democratic vote.  Each class then ran ‘An Election’, where they had to vote on who they would like to run our country… Mr Davie was a clear favourite!!

The War Museum was another favourite place we visited by many of the students.  We were given a virtual tour of the museum and then students were asked to create a pastel drawing which depicted war.  The amazing talent we have amongst our cohort is outstanding.  Our students should be extremely proud of their artwork.  They are all AWESOME!!

The Australian Institute of Sport was a popular session, which saw our students having to compete in challenge tasks.  Highest jump, stretch test, hanging test and standing long jump test were the challenges set.  Many students wanted to keep on attempting to beat their own record.

I think it is fair to say that everyone had such an enjoyable week…

Here is what some of the Sixers enjoyed the most:

S41

Nathan – I really enjoyed watching the video of the war museum, it was very interesting.  I also enjoyed designing my own electorate in the Wizarding World.
Hannah – I loved the ACMI session we participated in at the Media Arts rooms.  I found the information on the voting process interesting and it was fun getting to vote on different things through the week.
Raechel – The Wizarding World sessions were my favourite.  I enjoyed creating my own electorate and imagining the backstory and history of it.

S43

Cadel – I thought it was fun to create a name for our Wizarding World.  I also thought it was interesting that there are over 2500 clocks in Parliament House.
Jemma – I enjoyed designing my electorate for the Wizarding World.
Wut – Designing my electorate was lots of fun.
Ana – I really enjoyed getting to spend time with different classes and the movie afternoon was a good end to the week.

S15

Dilan – I enjoyed designing my own electorate.
Karla – I liked learning more about Ned Kelly and his history.
Mitchell – My favourite part of the week was learning about Ned Kelly and the Bush Ranger Gang.
Shayla – I enjoyed learning about Parliament House and what goes on there.

S17

Blayne – My favourite part of the camp week was the AIS session and getting to take part in the tests.
Jacob – I liked the Trivia afternoon and the sports tests.
Indi – I enjoyed the Trivia afternoon when we were in different groups and I also enjoyed the movie afternoon.  It was relaxing.
Max – The best thing about the camp week was the AIS sports tests we got to do.

Although we didn’t quite make it to the ACT, we definitely had a fabulous week 'virtually' visiting our Nation’s Capital.

Have a wonderful fortnight ahead,
