Intoducing Mr Andrew Murray

We would like to introduce our new teacher Mr Andrew Murray.
Name: Andrew Murray
Position: Teacher
Where did you complete high school?
Nepean High school, situated in Emu Plains, near Penrith. It’s now a performing arts school, but I finished year 12 there way before then. (I can’t sing or dance)
What was your favourite subject at school?
My favourite subjects at school were Agriculture (number No. 1), closely followed by Science.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I did not want to become a teacher when I left school, my parents were teachers and I didn’t want to do the same job as my parents. After completing university, I worked for an organisation called Mission Australia, this is where I worked with many homeless and unemployed young people. It was here that I realised that education is the most important thing to help people improve their situation.
Where was your first teaching job?
My very first teaching job was as a uni student, I worked a 6 month internship at a great school called Chifley College Mt Druitt, in Western Sydney. My first permanent placement after that was with Cranebrook High School located in Penrith where I worked for over 14 years.
What was something memorable about one of your teachers from school?
My science teacher (Mr Murphy) from my school growing up was amazing, not only was he knowledgeable and inspiring, but he remembered we were kids and was able to let us have some fun in class. Saying that, if you crossed the line, he would let you know about it!
What is your favourite sport/hobby?
My hobbies are travelling, photography and coffee. Ideally, I would love to be sitting in a little café drinking great coffee somewhere in the world. I played soccer when I lived in Blaxland, but haven’t done that in a few years, my sport now is walking my 3 staffies.
What is your Favourite type of music?
Being a child of the 70’s growing up in the 80’s I have fantastic taste in music. I like anything from the Beatles to Bowie, Cold Chisel to Metallica, as long as its Rock.
What is your favourite food?
I enjoy eating good, home cooked food. One of the reasons my wife and I moved to the country was to eat good locally produced food. Having a background in agriculture I also hope to produce some of my own food as well.
If you could go on a holiday anywhere, where would you go and why?
My wife and I love to travel. The favourite place we have been is a national park called Hwange National park near Victory Falls in Zimbabwe. There we camped in tents watching wild animal walk past. We would love to do that again someday.
What do you like best about Guyra Central School?
I am very lucky to teach at Guyra Central School, I am especially lucky that I teach students throughout the school, from Early Stage 1 all the way through to year 12. The students and staff have made me feel so very welcome. The best thing, I think, about Guyra Central school is the students and staff (and Russell the Alpaca).
