Author Visit – Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor

On Tuesday 11 October, Dr Cameron  visited St Raphael’s School to run workshops with our students. Foundation-Year 2 students enjoyed an interactive Big Screen Book Reading and follow-along drawing activity with Cameron. Year 3-6 students took a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book, and applying their own creative components. Cameron also engaged Year 5/6 students in a workshop exploring exciting and descriptive writing. What a great day it was!

In conjunction with the Author Visit, St Raphael’s School families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual books are $15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will have received an order form on the day of the workshops. Payment can be made online and completed forms can then be returned to the Office.

Using Cameron's example can you draw your own Stroogle?

LITERACY LEARNING & INVESTIGATIONS

Have you ever wondered how the Walker Learning Approach and literacy learning work together?

The Walker Learning Approach uses a range of open ended experiences to allow students to investigate, explore, manipulate, create and interact along with instruction in skills and knowledge in literacy, numeracy and other curriculum areas. This investigative learning approach places the child at the centre of the curriculum and teaching strategies. It ensures authentic, personalised learning for each student. During Investigations the students have the opportunity to practise speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. Students are able to practise and consolidate learnt literacy skills during their investigative play. Each area is purposefully set up to include a reading resource, writing implements and provocations to inspire conversations between students and teachers.  Investigations are a catalyst for an authentic use of literacy skills and are fundamental in contributing to the literacy development of our students.
