Year 3 - 6 Community
October 2022
What a great start we have had to the final term of 2022! We have already had some incursions, excursions and loads of hands-on learning. Out of the classroom each campus was invited to send students from Years 3-6 to the T20 World Cup events being held across Australia and of course at Kardinia Park. It was a great experience for those whose names were selected and a great disappointment to the many who put their hand up to go. Places were limited and hopefully the ones who attended really had a great experience. One gave it a 9!
We have been investigating changes of state between solids and liquids. We found out that that this can be caused by adding or removing heat. The students have really enjoyed hands-on experiments such as making oobleck, jelly, melting ice and chocolate. They have also had a fun filled visit from Professor Bunsen.
Coming up is a big event for them - a Visit to The the Great Ocean Road Chocolate Factory. This will be a simple and clear example of seeing melting and solidifying. (It will also be delicious!)
The 5/6 students this term are also learning about chemical science. They have been comparing the properties and behaviours of solids, liquids and gases by undertaking investigations and developing explanations for their observations. We are looking forward to an exciting incursion from ‘Mad About Science' later in the term.
Across the campuses Poetry will be a feature this term as well as how to write Science Reports. Over the course of the term, students will be focusing on poetry and procedural texts, or more specifically, scientific reports.
In writing we are enjoying 'Big Writes' again.
These writing sessions give students the opportunity to write with a particular focus and then use these writing pieces for future learning. During the term, students will use their writing pieces to again focus on the VCOP areas to develop their writing skills. Students will work with a ‘Breakdown Buddy’ to collaboratively analyse their texts with a peer and look at future goals for writing. Students will also have time to conference with their teacher about their learning goals and look at the strategies to undertake in order to achieve them.
We asked some Tallis students about their classroom work in Literacy and Numeracy and we reckon they are really enjoying it.!
Ruby Likes Numbers and writing her Game - The Race!
Nathaniel likes free writing but has his eyes set on a Queensland Holiday.
I hope to read about it!
O'Shea likes writing
It was a delight to see how proud our student representatives for each class were to be presented with their badges. These students will meet on a fortnightly basis to voice students' views on change or improvements they would like to see around their campus. What a great leadership opportunity for them!
Here are the Hendy Representatives
One of the highlights of Spring Term for our Year 6 students is always the Lightening Premiership. Our campuses trained hard for some weeks before the event and it paid off with some terrific performances - and whole heap of fun.
The Sports the children selected from were were Badminton, Cricket, Touch Rugby, Rounders and Hot shots Tennis.
Northern Bay students were terrific sports and had a great attitude. A special congratulations to the Badminton team who took out the championship and will progress to the next level later this year.
3/4 PROFESSOR BUNSEN INCURSION
The 3/4’s enjoyed an interactive presentation focusing on the influence heat has on matter. This session investigated the difference between hot and cold and our touch sense, the way heat moves and what happens when heat moves in or out of matter and the associating phase changes. Heat as the product of a chemical reaction such as combustion, sources of heat such as friction, electricity, chemical and the sun. The demonstrations included heat effects such as colour changes, melting, deformation or expansion, combustion.
