BROADCAST JOURNALISM EXCURSION

Year 9 Journalism students took a much-anticipated trip into the city on Monday 17 October. We went to the ACMI Museum and the SYN radio outlet at RMIT University to learn more about the production of radio and films.

The classes were divided into two groups, one went to RMIT first and the other to ACMI. Our class went to ACMI first. It was a thrilling and engaging experience. We had the opportunity to listen and learn about so many interesting and different features of filmmaking, TV news and video games. The memory garden was our favourite part of the museum as we were able to interact with this area the most. When we placed our hand beneath a light in a room full of miniature projectors and stands, a movie appeared on our hand.

Along with that, there were many other features full of information relating to our country and how other common artistic works in our lives like film, tv and digital art are created. Afterwards, we walked to Melbourne Central to enjoy some lunch and a break, however shortly after we made our way to RMIT University to start creating our very own radio show.

We participated in a workshop that taught us how to record a radio segment. We then split up into groups and chose a topic to present. Our group decided to talk about the AFL and whether or not it was a good thing in our contemporary Australian culture. Other groups gave their opinions on horror movies, fashion and weather. Creating the show was an excellent learning opportunity for all of us as we understood what it was really like to hear our voices properly on a radio segment, experience the feeling when recording and discover the behind-the-scenes aspects of a radio show or podcast.

Overall, this was an incredible day that was full of new and exciting experiences but most importantly spent with friends, learning new things together. A huge thank you to Ms Walker and Mr Gledhill for organising this wonderful day.
