LA FETE DE LA SCIENCE FRENCH INCURSION - 12 OCTOBER

Our French students were given the opportunity to find out more about how their language skills can help them in their future studies and careers in the sciences.

Here are some of their reactions to this wonderful experience.

Knowledge was gained, interest was sparked and ideas were born during La Fete de la Science.

Distinguished speakers: Professor Frédéric Hollande, Professor Tim Fletcher, Associate Professor Joanne Ryan, Dr Helene Kammoun and Prune Bokobza intrigued everyone who participated by talking to us about the various Branches of Science, French Culture and career choices as well as various pathways.

It gave us a whole new meaning of the word science. Students across the state were eager to learn more about this topic by asking questions they were curious to hear answers to.

We all walked out of the classroom having a desire for extra information, thirsty for more. La Fete de la Science was a special topic and we were all very grateful to have this opportunity.

On Wednesday 12 October 2022, there was the Fete de la Science incursion. All students were sent out an email to choose if they want to participate in the incursion or not. For the students that chose to attend they were sent to CO4 in periods 5 and 6 on Wednesday. We listened to some scientists that spoke French give their talk. They spoke about their journey to become what they are today. They gave us some inspirational tips like just do what you want to do and don’t worry too much about your ATAR.

The people that spoke to us on the online meeting was Professor Frédéric Hollande, who is the Head of the Department of Clinical Pathology at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research, Professor Tim Fletcher who is a Professor of Urban Ecohydrology, Ecosystem and Forest Sciences at the University of Melbourne, Associate Professor Joanne Ryan who is the Head of the Biological Neuropsychiatry and Dementia research unit in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (SPHPM), Dr Helene Kammoun who is Senior Project Manager in Research Support and Operations at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and Prune Bokobza who is International expert, hydrogen and renewable energies, currently working with Invest Victoria.

La Fete de La Science is an opportunity for many to listen and study the helpful but unpredictable path of bilingualism. This special event held on Wednesday 12 October, run by Alliance Francaise, gave several varying perspectives into life as a bilingual scientist, ranging from epidemiology to statisticians and cancer research biologists.

Along with myself, students from Years 7 to 9 were granted the possibility to understand and pose questions towards what benefits learning a new language and the achievable career openings that accompany bilingualism. This came in the form of an online webcast where these scientists discussed personal anecdotes along with answering questions posed by students.

This experience broadened our perspective towards French learning and has challenged us in where to take our French journey next. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience and learnt plenty along the way.
