Thunderstorm asthma, hay fever and Covid-19

Having good control of asthma or hay fever helps to prepare and protect our loved ones from thunderstorm asthma and hay fever during the grass pollen season (1 October through 31 December).

It is important for students to carefully manage any hay fever or asthma symptoms, as these conditions can produce symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose and loss or change to sense of smell or taste, which are similar to COVID-19 symptoms. The challenges in differentiating between these three illnesses are deciding on the appropriate treatment, and if students should be excluded from school.

Students with known or suspected asthma or hay fever should talk to their GP about their ongoing management.

Your GPs can provide:

• advice on how to best treat asthma and hay fever symptoms and to prevent them from recurring

• advice on whether testing for COVID-19 is required

• a written up-to-date asthma action plan or hay fever treatment plan, including what symptoms might suggest COVID-19 infection and require them to get tested for COVID-19, and to stay home until a negative result is received.

Epidemic thunderstorm asthma

To find out more about thunderstorm asthma and how you can protect yourselves and those you care for from the risks, see Thunderstorm Asthma on the Better Health Channel website

https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/campaigns/thunderstorm-asthma

The VicEmergency app forecasts thunderstorm asthma risk between 1 October and 31 December for days days at a time (today, tomorrow and the day after) using a coloured scale from low risk (green), moderate risk (orange) to high risk (red). While not a formal warning, this information can help you manage risk and prepare. On a high-risk day, the VicEmergency* warning platform will issue warnings and advice. https://emergency.vic.gov.au/prepare/#thunderstorm-asthma-forecast
