Grade 1 & 2

Term 4, Week 2 2022

Welcome back to our last term. The year has flown by and we are already looking at 2023 planning. We have seen such incredible learning, and we will be completing more formal testing over the coming weeks. Our Term 4 Integrated Unit is How We Stay Safe and Healthy. We are planning special visitors who will be talking about keeping safe and healthy.

Keep an eye on the Newsletter for special events such as the Disco and House Sports.

Reading/Writing

In Reading, we are continuing to investigate quality mentor texts, including poetry. Students will be looking at vocabulary to visualise and make connections to themselves, other texts and the world around us. Questioning and deeper level thinking will be done during reading sessions to expand comprehension, particularly inferential understandings. Thank-you for continuing with Take-home reading at home. Your one-to-one time and modelling of reading behaviours really makes a difference. Retelling a story demonstrates understanding, and asking questions throughout reading also enhances their comprehension.

In Writing, we will be re-visiting persuasive texts. We will be linking our writing to our Integrated topics. We will also be unpacking different poetry types, such as cinquain, diamante and haiku poetry.  We will be looking at how these poems are structured and how poet’s use vocabulary effectively in their poetry. This ties in with our 6+ traits of writing, highlighting Word choice and Organisation.

Maths

In Mathematics this week we are learning about money, identifying the different notes and coins, calculating money and giving change. We will also learn about fractions and how to tell the time. We will revise other areas of number such as counting, place value addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The students had really enjoyed playing the fluency games in the classroom. You might like to ask your child to teach you how to play these games.

Integrated

This term we will be studying the various aspects of Health and Safety. We will be covering these questions:

  • What does it mean to be healthy?
  • What does it mean to be safe?
  • How does being healthy or unhealthy affect your life?
  • How does being safe or unsafe affect your life?
  • What can I do to be healthy?
  • What can I do to be safe?

There will be a few incursions this term from the Police, Firefighters, Ambulance and the RACV. There will be a Compass posting for the RACV incursion with date details, and you will need to fill in the permission form.

The Grade 1 & 2 focus is on Gender and Identity. This topic will take place through rotational group activities.
