Grade 5 & 6

Term 4, Week 2 2022

Welcome Message

The 5/6 teaching team are excited to be back for our final term of the year. We hope you all had an amazing break and are ready and rested for Term 4. Last week we started off the term with our Science Week. Students across Grades 5 and 6 were able to participate in multiple experiments across the week and had an absolute blast at our Science Incursion!

Literacy

Our focus in Literacy this term is poetry. The students will continue to be exposed to rich literature and different types of texts including mentor texts, online texts and viewing videos.

For Reading the students will continue to establish and work towards their reading goals set during conferences. The students have choice and agency in the texts that they choose to read and in the way they demonstrate their comprehension.

In Writing the students will be taught explicitly how to narrow down their writing ideas, along with a focus on figurative language and word choice.

Students will continue to follow the writing process working towards developing their writing skills independently. They are supported to set goals and evaluate their writing through regular teacher conferences. We are continuing to see students complete published pieces for their Writers Gift, creating individual and unique pieces and we look forward to these being shared with you at the end of the year.

Numeracy

In Numeracy we are continuing to develop fluency with number facts through online, partner and group games. We continue to develop the four proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning through the various topics we will explore.

Our focus topics and concepts this term are:

● Number – Fractions, decimals and percentages

● Measurement and Geometry – Time

● Statistics and Probability - Chance

Integrated

This term we have already explored science with a focus on chemical changes. Students will also participate in a Digital Technologies unit with a focus on coding. Our Grade 5 students will then move on to complete a Leadership Unit which prepares all Grade 5 students for the responsibilities of moving into Grade 6 and their final year of Primary School. Whilst our Grade 6 students will spend time preparing for graduation.

Homework

There will be a change to homework tasks this term. Homework will continue to be sent home and due back at school on Fridays. Homework tasks will focus on Reading and Viewing, with students choosing an online text to view and respond to. Students can choose the type of response they make from a supplied grid. Students will write complete their responses in their Homework Book and upload a photo to Showbie each week.
