Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

Senior School has felt very industrious this week!

Year Eleven examinations are well underway, and I have been delighted with the positive manner in which students have presented to these assessments; lots of bright eyes and upbeat chatter as they arrive, well organised and ready to show everything they know.

Never have Year Eleven examinations been so important now that universities are being so open about early offers next semester.

Year Ten students are finalising assessments and many of them are preparing for their examinations next week. Conversations during recess and lunchtime have even drifted towards the academic …

Meanwhile, our Year Eleven Alternate Programme is running for those students sitting three or fewer examinations. As students prepare to move into the world beyond school, I have noticed that working hard at school and being a positive member of a sporting team is no longer everything that employers, TAFE and universities are looking for, not to mention scholarship providers and other more competitive destinations. We have put together a program for our students to add to their profiles by completing:

  • Short Courses: Responsible Service of Alcohol, First Aid, Working at Heights and in Confined Spaces, Surf Rescue Certificate
  • Service Opportunities:  Beach cleanup day in conjunction with the City of Albany, Ball preparation activities, service for the school community in the Dining Hall, with the Facilities crew, on the farm and in the Library
  • Work Experience: Some students are topping up their hours as part of their School based traineeships, others are completing a one-off placement to add to their experiences. Students are at a variety of places including Albany Shellfish Hatchery, Moss Conveyancing, Suggs Machinery, Fredericks Café, Spencer Park Education Support Centre, Jaguar Cabling and St Joseph’s College.

The programme has been embraced enthusiastically by students and we look forward to building on it next year.
