the Head of Junior School\u003c/h2>\u003cp>The in-term swimming programme has started brilliantly, and what a lovely way for students to finish off the final few weeks of the term with daily trips to the pool. Each day begins with normal classroom routines until midday, then classes load into buses and make their way to Albany Aquatic Leisure Centre (ALAC) for swimming lessons. Students are grouped in swimming competency stages and coached by training swimming teachers from the aquatic centre on their stroke technique and swim survival skills. \u003c/p>\u003cdiv class=\"embed\" data-id=\"5Dep7oN\"> \u003c/div>\u003cp>At the end of the two-week swimming block, families will receive a swimming competency report detailing what their child is able to confidently demonstrate. Swimming skills are important for children at any stage of the year but particularly as we enter into the summer months where many families access pools and beaches more frequently. These annual swimming lessons are valuable for students, and I encourage families to upskill yourselves on general water safety practices also. This is a culmination event for Year Six students and their families to recognise their transition from Junior School into Year Seven. The occasion is in two parts, the celebration ceremony then their learning exhibition. The Celebration ceremony will take place in the Multi-Purpose Sport Complex where each student will be recognised before their peers and family for their contribution to Year Six and their time in the Junior School. Then students move into their Learning Exhibition which is a showcase of their final inquiry for Year Six exploring ‘Who we are – the influences and experiences that have shaped us as young people’. This inquiry helps students to articulate a sense of self at this time of transition as they culminate their Junior School years and prepare for Year Seven. Each student has their own display set up in the Junior School area that they will share with all families in Year Six. First, we went to the City of Albany building, and we were spoken to about what a few of the roles were by people who are head of their departments. Our next location was the City of Albany depot. In this part of the taster, we went walking around the depot and learnt that the City of Albany is also in charge of things like the pound and trees that are near the road. We then went to the tourist information centre and looked around the reception area and then looked at some of the new informative technology in the centre. After this, we went to the Town Hall to look at the art gallery, the upstairs stage/ theatre room, and the bell tower. I learnt that everyone who has worked in the bell tower had written their name on the wall. There are roughly 100 years of names inside the bell tower. The people that spoke to us on the taster were all friendly and keen to tell us about their work and how they came to that career. Almost all of them had been in a couple of very different careers before landing in their current position. This offered me some comfort in knowing that I can figure out what I want to do later in life and go through different careers to find what it is I want to do. I found the excursion fun and I learnt a few things that I didn’t know about the Albany area. \u003c/i>\u003c/p>\u003cdiv class=\"embed\" data-id=\"NvEeDd5\"> \u003c/div>\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Bathgate Farm – Austin Brown\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\u003cp>\u003ci>Nineteen of us Year Nines hopped on the bus on Wednesday morning at about 8.45am for a 20-minute bus ride out to Bathgate Farm on Lower Denmark Road. When we arrived at the farm, we were greeted by Andrew Bathgate, the owner of the farm. Andrew started off by laying down some rules about safety and around the farm in general. The first thing that we were shown was Andrew's spud harvester. It was operated by a little Massey Fergusson tractor and had a conveyer belt that picked up the dirt and sifted out the potatoes from the dirt before they dropped off onto the ground. He then took us to look at his neighbour’s potato harvester which was a lot bigger than Andrew’s but with basically the same mechanics. After our tour of his sheds, Andrew put us to work picking the spuds. He drove the tractor and we followed along picking up the potatoes and putting them in buckets - we did this for around half an hour. Once we had finished the section Andrew had us working in, we walked down the track to his main paddock, which was mainly underwater and inaccessible to machinery. He then showed us his pride crop of potatoes and didn’t warn us that the sprinklers were about to come on, wetting us all! After a few more questions, it was time to leave Bathgate Farm and head back to school. Overall, it was an interesting day on the farm, giving us a great insight into what it’s like working in an agricultural job.\u003c/i>\u003c/p>\u003cdiv class=\"embed\" data-id=\"5ZAmeaM\"> \u003c/div>\u003cp>\u003cstrong>AEC / Hilton Garden Inn – Evie Roxburgh and Iris Miller\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\u003cp>\u003ci>As part of the Year Nine Career Tasting experience, our small group of around 25 students made our way to the AEC (Albany Entertainment Centre) and the Hilton Garden Inn for the day. The experience was very eye-opening and showed us all the challenging work and effort that goes into producing a superior-quality show and running a hotel effectively. After listening to the Executive Manager, Head Chef and Stage Manager talk about the paths they took to get where they are today, we got to see firsthand all the effort that goes into making a great show backstage. It was interesting to note that there are other fabulous places to study theatre other than WAAPA, such as the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. Next, we were lead 15 metres up the massive sides of the main theatre to platforms that were suspended over the auditorium. There, we got to see all the stations where light filaments and suspension wires were kept and organised. with the positive manner in which students have presented to these assessments; lots of bright eyes and upbeat chatter as they arrive, well organised and ready to show everything they know. Under the guidelines, schools can be granted up to five years registration. Great Southern Grammar (Pre-Kindergarten to Year Twelve) has been awarded this maximum status. This is a reflection on the School's policies, procedures, financial undertakings, curriculum delivery, governance and child protection approaches. \u003c/p>\u003ch2>The Real Inspector Hound \u003c/h2>\u003cp>On the weekend, I attended the production of \u003ci>The Real Inspector Hound\u003c/i> at the Spectrum Theatre and was very impressed with the Year Ten drama students’ performance and support from the crew. The play started as a school project but with enthusiasm and commitment, it was extended into the Spectrum Theatre for us to enjoy. Under the direction of staff member, Miss Katie Gunning, and Year Ten student Tahlia Ruffell, the cast and crew lift the lid on a murder mystery in an isolated country house. During the play, we experienced many starring roles and hilarious exchanges. It was one of the highlights of the year. \u003c/p>\u003ch2>Orientation Day\u003c/h2>\u003cp>The constant rain and wind did not detract from the Orientation Day last Friday. Future students were greeted with our customary GSG warm welcome. Many new students were eager, but a little anxious about joining a new school. This is to be expected given this significant change. A good school orientation provides an opportunity for new students and parents to become familiar with the physical surroundings, begin to make new friends and provide an understanding of what is expected in the classroom.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Our physical surroundings are unique, with a breadth of history. I always enjoy telling the story that prior to being used as a school site, the site was used for housing the whale watching seaplanes. How times have changed. For new students, the buildings, classroom undercover areas, ovals and multipurpose areas are just a few of the physical attributes on our school site.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>The social and emotional beginnings at a new school are important. Feeling a sense of belonging contributes to a positive start at a new school. Whilst on the other hand, friendships take time and should not be rushed. 'Be patient with developing new friends' is always emphasised when beginning at a new school. \u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Academic success at a new school should always be compared to where a student begins. At Orientation, I stress the importance of making progress irrespective of your current academic standing. Everyone is capable of making progress, and the challenge is to make as much progress as you can within the time that has been set.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Throughout the Orientation Day, students lead the way at assembly, music events, social interactions and setting the tone for a wonderful day. Thank you to the students and staff involved.\u003c/p>\u003ch2>P&F Annual General Meeting\u003c/h2>\u003cp>The P&F held their AGM recently and current Vice-President, Mr Darryl Hancock and current Secretary, Ms Joanne Wegner advised of their resignation from the Management Team. Current President, Mr Jim Darmody thanked Darryl and Joanne for their valuable contribution to the P&F. The P&F Management Committee for 2023 comprises Mr Jim Darmody (President), Mr Jason Pages (Vice-President) and Dads in Great Southern Representative, Mr John Byrne with the Secretary’s position remaining vacant. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr Jim Darmody if you are interested in the Secretary’s position.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003ch2>715 School Bus\u003c/h2>\u003cp>Swan Transit has recently received a complaint from RAAFA Retirement village from residents, through the Transperth website, regarding GSG parents parking in the bus bay and on the median strip on Ulster Road when they drop their students off to catch the 715 school bus.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Could I please ask parents not to park in these places, and if there isn't room to drop their children off in a safe manner, can parents please use the bus stop at the bottom of St Joseph’s College where there is ample parking off the road.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Swan Transit has advised that the situation will be monitored and if the practice continues, the bus stop may need to be closed.\u003c/p>\u003ch2>End of Year events\u003c/h2>\u003cp>The end of year is fast approaching and so is the Christmas Service, Junior School Awards Ceremony and Years Seven to Eleven Awards Ceremony.
